Congress alliance wins India polls: Sonia names Manmohan next premier: BJP concedes defeat

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's ruling coalition won an overwhelming election victory on Saturday, boosting hopes of a stable government as the emerging Asian power faces economic downturn and tensions with Pakistan.
Singh's Congress-led coalition, riding on the back of years of economic growth, did better than expected and will probably be only just short of an outright majority, according to data from the election commission and projections by TV channels.
"The people of India have spoken, and spoken with great clarity," Singh told reporters.

Chittagong arms haul case: Former NSI DGs arrested

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday arrested two former director generals (DG) of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) in connection with the sensational 10-truck arms haul case in Chittagong.
Maj Gen (retd) Rezaqul Haider Chowdhury and Brig Gen (retd) Abdur Rahim Chowdhury were picked up from their DOHS residences at Mohakhali in the capital, according to CID and NSI sources.
During the arms haul in Chittagong in 2004, Abdur Rahim was DG of the NSI while Rezaqul Haider was director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).

With the Lok Sabha poll results showing serious setbacks for the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress heading for a historic win West Bengal, the air is thick with suggestions of a split in the Communist Party of India-Marxist.
"What political analysts and party insiders predicted long back will soon be a reality, the CPI-M would be divided into two groups: Pro-Karat and anti-Karat," a senior party leader told rediff.com, speaking on condition of anonymity. Prakash Karat, of course, is the CPI-M general secretary, its main leader.

Tipaimukh Dam: Dhaka to lodge protest with India

Expressing deep concern on the construction of the Tipaimukh dam by India, two cabinet ministers of the government yesterday said Bangladesh would go for an official protest against the construction once the new government of India was formed.
"Bangladesh would officially lodge protest against construction of the Tipaimukh dam, which would cause catastrophe on the 'ecology and economy ' in the north eastern region of the country," AMA Muhith, Finance Minister told journalists after the Annual General Meeting of Jalalabad Association at Bangladesh Shishu Academy Auditorium.

Sustainable architecture can ensure best use of resources: BUET team wins world award

Architects at a programme here yesterday said Bangladesh needs sustainable architectures to ensure the best use of its existing resources.
"Bangladesh suffers from various problems due to mismanagement of wealth and lack of sustainable architectures," Architect Ahsan Ullah Mojumder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) told a press conference on the campus.
Sustainable architecture is a general term that describes environmentally-conscious design techniques in the field of architecture.

Joy offers fateha at father's grave

UNB, Pirganj

Sajib Wazed Joy offered fateha at the mazar of his father, Dr Wazed Miah, at Fatehpur village here yesterday (Saturday) and sought blessings of Almighty Allah for the departed soul.
He also placed wreaths at the grave at about 11:10am.
Joy urged the local people to pray for his late father who died on May 9 at Square Hospital in Dhaka.
His uncle, Maulana Abdul Khaleque Miah, received Joy when he arrived here by road. Joy's cousins Shahadat Hossain Bakul and Tajimul Islam Shamim and Sayed Reza Shanto were present.

Farakka Day observed: Call to raise Tipaimukh issue in Int'l Fora

Speakers at a roundtable yesterday called upon the government to take initiatives to raise the Tipaimukh Dam issue in the international forums to get due share of waters of Transboundary rivers including the Borak.
They emphasised the need for asking the government to discuss the issue with Indian government to stop the construction of the dam to protect the country from desertification.
Addressing the roundtable organised Islamic Movement Bangladesh (IMB) on 'Water Aggression of India: Our Responsibility' at its office in the city the speakers also emphasised on the need to create a strong movement against construction of the dam of all political parties by shunning political differences.
