JMB dens busted: Boma Mizan, wife held after explosion; arms, grenades recovered

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday arrested an outlawed Jama'tul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) explosives expert and his wife, in the city's Mirpur area who exploded a bomb in an effort to protect her husband during the raid on their home. RAB recovered firearms, hand grenades and huge quantity of bomb-making materials from his procession. Rezanur Rahman Khan, Assistant Director General of the RAB told the New Nation that Jahidur Rahman, alias "Boma Mizan", is a senior member of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).  |
BCL, Shibir clash at CU: 30 hurt CU Correspondent
At least 20 students were injured in a clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir at Chittagong University (CU) on Thursday night. Following the incident, the university authority took a decision by an emergency Syndicate meeting to keep close the university till 21May and formed a three-member investigation committee headed by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Abu Yusuf to look into the matter. Sources said the violence erupted when BCL activist Sajib halted the shibir activists to hold a meeting of Quran Taalim at the Abdur Rab Hall mosque around 10:30pm which was continued till 5:00am, the feud left 20 students injured from both sides.  |
Govt urged to take initiative: Stop construction of Tipaimukh Dam

Speakers at a discussion yesterday called upon the government to take all possible initiatives to stop the construction of Tipaimukh dam on Borak River saying that the northern and eastern side of the country would be turned into desert due to the effect of the construction of Tipaimukh dam. They said that the Government is silent when the Indian government is implementing the construction of the dam violating the Internatinal River Law and denying the interest of Bangladesh.  |
To face global recession: Cash incentive likely for apparel sector Syful Islam
The government may award cash incentive and further policy support to the readymade garment industry in the upcoming national budget to help face the challenges of the ongoing global economic recession, informed sources said. In the first phase of Tk 3,424 crore stimulus package, announced a month back, the apparel sector was left out from cash incentive. That time the government said the readymade garment industry was not affected by the global economic meltdown.  |
Freed reporter Saberi leaves Iran

Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi has left Iran following her release from jail earlier this week. She arrived in Austria from Tehran with her parents. She said she would stay there a few days before flying home to Fargo, North Dakota. Ms Saberi, 32, was freed on Monday after spending four months in prison on spying charges, which she denies. She was originally sentenced to eight years, but the term was cut on appeal to a two-year suspended sentence. Her case had attracted international attention.  |
Slumdog star's home demolished

The Mumbai slum home of one of the child stars of the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire has been demolished by city authorities. Reports say that police smacked the boy, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, with a bamboo stick before ordering him out. The authorities claim he and other families were squatting on land that was owned by the government. He played a younger version of one of the main characters in the film, which scooped eight Oscars. "We are homeless, we have nowhere to go," Azharuddin said after the demolition.  |
Market review: Uptrend in kitchen market, rice stable Talha Bin Habib
The prices of some essential items especially edible oil, lentil and some other varieties of vegetables were showing an upward trend in the city's kitchen markets yesterday. The rice price, however, remained within the 'purchasing capacity' of the customers. The traders were selling soybean with irrational rate despite commitment to the concerned authority not to sell it with high price, market experts said. They said that a section of unscrupulous businessmen raised the soybean price abnormally with a plea to increase its price in the international markets, they added.  |
