The army led court of enquiry identified several reasons for the carnage at the Peelkhana BDR headquarters on February 25 and 26, the foremost being the deep resentment of BDR jawans against the " Dal Bhat operation" launched during the last caretaker government.
More facilities for the army personnel compared with BDR jawans, non-payment of bills of the BDR jawans for duties in connection with the national elections and stoppage of illegal income of the BDR men have been cited as some of the major factors that incited them to stage the mutiny, according to a report submitted to the chief of army staff General Gen Moeen U Ahmed by the court of enquiry on May 11.

Tk 100,000 cr ambitious budget: Violent politics challenge to achieving targets: Muhith

UNB, Dhaka

Finance Minister AMA Muhith yester said the violent nature of politics would be a major challenge to the government in achieving the goals of an ambitious budget it is going to unveil on June 11 for the next fiscal year.
He said the budget 2009-10 is going to be much more than Tk 100,000 crore having substantial allocations for the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects.
The minister categorically said the ambitious budget is to give the signal that the government must meet the demands of critical situation against the backdrop of recession, as it is serious about fulfilling its election pledges.

BNP organises human chain of BDR carnage
UNB, Dhaka

Opposition BNP yesterday staged a countrywide human-chain demonstration against what they said government 'attempt to hide the real culprits' involved in staging the carnage at the BDR Headquarters and demanded that the mystery behind the mayhem be unveiled immediately.
The one-hour programme passed off rather peacefully bar a little police action in Savar area, according to preliminary reports on the demo, also arranged to press for quick and fair investigation of the Peelkhana killings and an end to government's 'vindictive' behavior with the opposition in its bid to divert public attention from the BDR headquarters incident.

ACC power to be curtailed
UNB, Dhaka

A provision of the Anti-Corruption Commission law is likely to be reinstated to curtail its power so that the watchdog body could not issue any arrest warrant against a government official without informing his higher authority.
The country's top bureaucrats, mainly the secretaries of different ministries, yesterday discussed the issue and adopted a proposal to put forward to the Cabinet for amending the rules of the ACC, which had booked many bigwigs, including top politicians and bureaucrats, amid an anti-graft purge during the past interim regime under state of emergency.

Wazed Miah’s qulkhwani held

The Qulkhwani of nuclear scientist Dr. MA Wazed Miah, also the husband of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was held yesterday after Asr prayer at Jamuna, the official residence of Prime Minister.
Salahuddin Ahmed, Khatib of Baitul Mukarram mosque, led the Asr prayer and administered the milad mahfil and special prayers at the Qulkhwani.
Thousands of people of all walks of life participated in the Qulkhwani and sought eternal peace of the departed soul of Dr. Wazed and prayed for safe and long healthy lives of Sheikh Hasina, their son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Hossain Putul.

New pay commission, for teachers soon

UNB, Dhaka

The government will form a separate pay commission for teachers from primary school to university levels aiming to restore their dignity, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said yesterday while unveiling a package measure for upgrading the education sector.
"We want to form separate pay commission and recruitment board for all the teachers," he said, adding that it's a 'time-consuming' matter to implement the major recipe of the Grand Alliance government.
The Education Minister made the disclosure to reporters after inaugurating a Tk 682 crore project titled 'Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project' at a city hotel.
