Power, infrastructure, law and order high on agenda: Amnesty for undisclosed money in five sectors

The government is going to turn a blind eye to undisclosed money of tycoons, if invested in five sectors -pharmaceutical, cement, toys, shoes and garments-, Finance Minister AMA Muhit said yesterday.
He disclosed the plan at the National Consultative Committee meeting at the Sheraton Hotel, to cheers from both the entrepreneurs of the select sectors and those who are willing to get their 'black money' whitened through investing in productive work.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) jointly organized the meet with FBCCI president Annisul Huq in the chair.

The setting aside of the 5th Amendment which gave a legal coverage to the period from August 15,1975 to 9 April, 1979 has given rise to many questions. It is like a Pandora's Box being opened to tell a bleak future.
The High Court Judgment declared illegal the Mushtaque-Sayem-Zia military regimes. The political watchers said, it was intended to stop the recurrence of the military rule. The Judgement seemed to have compromised many of the happenings in this era for the sake of public interest.

Peelkhana carnage: Probe report likely to be submitted today
UNB, Dhaka

The official inquiry committee on the BDR carnage is likely to submit its report today, State Minister for Home Affairs Tanjim Ahmed Sohel Taj said.
"If not already submitted today, it may be submitted tomorrow," he told reporters after a meeting at the Home Ministry on law-and-order situation in Dhaka city and its adjoining areas.
In reply to a question, Taj confirmed that the army inquiry committee on the carnage at the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) headquarters already submitted its report on Tuesday. Contents of the report were not officially available.

Jorina Begum, 50, along with her family members, is living in a dilapidated hut beside a road on the bank of river Meghna at Tajumoddin in Bhola district, a southern coastal district in Bangladesh.
"We have been living here and there for over 20 years as the river has snatched all of our belongings. We have survived by struggling with natural calamities like storm and tidal surge," the frustrated woman said.

a daughter and a grandson is living at the slope of the Tajumoddin road cum flood protection embankment, that was entirely washed away during the 1970 cyclone leaving around 5,00,000 people dead.

DAB leader Zahid sent to jail

BSS, Dhaka

A court here on Wednesday sent Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) leader Dr ZAM Zahid Hossain to jail when he surrendered to the court in a case filed by Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC).
The ACC filed the case against Dr Zahid on October 30, 2007 with Ramna thana on the allegation of acquiring wealth beyond his known income sources.

The Special Court-6 of Dhaka handed down 13 years imprisonment to Dr Zahid on the charge along with fining him Taka 10.50 lakh. The court also ordered confiscation of his illegally earned wealth of about Taka 3.

Science Bhaban after Wazed demanded

The leaders of ruling Awami League (AL) yesterday demanded establishment of a science Bhaban in the name of late nuclear scientist Dr. Wazed for his outstanding contribution in the science and technology sector of the country.
The leaders placed this demand at a condolence meeting commemorating the late scientist at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in the capital.
Speakers said that the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina felt the need of her scientist husband to establish the country as a Digital Bangladesh.

Joint Stock Cos, firms to be modernised

UNB, Dhaka

Commerce Minister Faruk Khan yesterday said the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms would soon be modernized and shifted to a suitable place near Sonargaon Hotel for better services.
"Business registration is the gateway to the formal economy; so we've taken the initiative to modernize the Joint Stock Companies' office to enhance its activities and services," he said.
The Commerce Minister made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural session of a two-day workshop on 'Business Registration in Sounth Asia' held at Hotel Sheraton in the morning.
