Wazed laid to rest with state honour: Thousands attend janazas, funeral function

Noted nuclear scientist Dr M A Wazed Miah and also the husband of the Prime Minister, was laid to rest at his family graveyard in Fatehpur village in Pirgonj of Rangpur with the tears of thousands of well-wishers. He was buried with state honour at 3:00p.m. Three Namaz-e-janazas were held. The first Janaza was held at Baitul Mokarram in Dhaka, the second Janaza was held at Pirgonj High School ground at 1.50 PM and the third was held at Fatehpur Primary School Ground in Pirgonj. Latest shake-up: 35 police officials transferred Staff Reporter
In a latest reshuffle in the police administration, a total of 35 high police officials including two additional deputy inspector generals were transferred to different places of the country yesterday. The shake-up is said to be a part of efforts of the new Awami League government to improve law and order situation across the country. Of the 35 transferred police officers, 33 are superintendent of police (SP). According to an official announcement yesterday, SM Hafizur Rahman, Additional Commissioner of RMP, has been transferred to Khulna Metropolitan Police while Mili Biswas, Commandant (Additional DIG) of PTC in Rangpur, to Dhaka Range.  |
Morshed Khan surrenders, sent to jail Court Correspondent
A Court of Dhaka sent former Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan to prison yesterday after he surrendered to the Court in a graft case. Fugitive Morshed Khan surrendered to the Special Court No 7 Sunday and sought bail in the case, while Judge Md Sirajul Islam heard the bail petition and rejected it. However, the Judge directed the jail authorities to allow the convict Division and medical treatment facilities in the prison. On August 4, last year, Special Court No 7 of Dhaka sentenced Morshed Khan to 13 years' imprisonment and "a fine of Taka ten lakh, in default he will suffer one year more in prison.  |
Move to face global meltdown challenges: Banks, FIs asked to strictly follow banking rules Staff Reporter
Commercial banks and financial institutions have been asked to strictly comply with the banking regulations to be prepared to face the challenges of global recession. The newly appointed Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman made the call yesterday addressing a function at Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) auditorium in the city. "We cannot say the heat of the global recession will not touch us. So, we'll have to remain prepared," Atiur said.  |
Move to keep market stable during Ramzan Rafiqul Islam Azad
Ahead of the holy month of Ramzan, the government is going to take various measures to control the prices of essential commodities during the period. The Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Commerce will jointly take steps as directed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Talking to reporters, Commerce Minister Faruq Khan said the government is taking all-out effort to keep the prices of essential at a tolerable level. As part of the effort, the government is considering formation of a permanent monitoring cell to the Ministry of Commerce to monitor market situation and bring an amendment to the procurement policy to reduce tax on import of some commodities.  |
Commentary: Delay in bringing back crores of people's money may be bad for govt's image As reported in a number of national dailies hundreds of crores of Taka worth of money laundered by some influential people are lying with foreign banks. As against this, the official initiative to bring back the money appears to be slow even though the Law Minister has been quoted to have said that preparations have been finalised for this. The initiative to detect money laundering by influentials was taken by the immediate past caretaker government which reigned under a state of emergency and succeeded to bring around a thousand crore Taka back to the country.  |
