HC judgement rejecting 5th amendment: SC allows BNP to appeal : SCBA voices concern over bid to restore legality of military regimes

The Supreme Court Monday permitted BNP secretary-general Delwar Hossain, as an intervening applicant, to file a fresh petition for leave to appeal against the 2005 High Court judgment that declared illegal the 5th constitutional amendment ratifying military regimes of the 1970s.
In its crucial judgment on the 5th amendment, the High Court had declared unlawful the rule of Khandaker Mushtaque Ahmed, Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem and Maj Gen Ziaur Rahman since the August 15, 1975 changeover through military coup till April 9, 1979 when democratic transition started with parliamentary elections.

President reinstates Army Chief: Nepal’s PM resigns amid power struggle

Nepal's prime minister resigned on Monday amid a power struggle over his firing of the army chief, saying he was stepping down to "save the peace process" that brought the Himalayan nation out of a bloody decade-long civil war.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, a former Maoist guerrilla leader, made the announcement on television Monday afternoon, one day after his firing of the army chief was rejected by President Ram Baran Yadav - who officially leads the army - and which caused some of his key political allies to withdraw from the ruling coalition.

Apartments to replace children’s park: DCC under pressure to close Wonderland

The Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) is going to close down the Wonderland, a children Park at the posh area of Gulshan, reportedly under pressure from the influential quarters for building super deluxe apartments for the wealthy people.
The Wonderland is one of the four main parks in the capital city of Dhaka for the amusement and entertainment of the children. The three other parks are the Shishu Park at Shahbagh, children's parks at Shamoly and Saidabad.
Of them, only the National Park at Shahbagh is directly run by the DCC.

BCL activists demand DUCSU poll

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of Awami League, yesterday urged the government and the Dhaka University (DU) authority to hold mass desired DUCSU (Dhaka University Central Student Union) election.
The demand came from a rally held on the university campus organised by BCL DU unit.
The demands, which were placed in the rally, are immediate election of DUCSU along with Hall Sangsad election, removing residential crisis, improving meal standard, ensuring sufficient transportation facilities and reducing price of all kinds of academic ingredients.

It was 9:30 in the morning. The busiest hour of the day. Masuma Jahan arrived at Jatrabari from Mirpur to see her ailing daughter who lives in South Jatrabari adjacent to a Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Seeing the condition of the road, she became perplexed.
"The bus dropped me near the park. I crossed the Jatrabari circle by
footover bridge. But now I am bewildered. I could not understand how could I go to my dear daughter's place? ", Masuma said with a frustrating voice.
There is no footpath beside the highway to walk.

President asks varsity authorities: Ensure standard of edn

UNB, Dhaka

President Zillur Rahman Monday asked the authorities concerned to ensure the standard of education so students could prove their worth in international competitions.
"I urge all concerned to be careful while formulating curricula so those are not confined only to book-learning," he said.
The President was addressing the first convocation of the Stamford University at Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Centre (BCFCC).
Professor Emeritus of Dhaka University Dr Sirajul Islam Chowdhury delivered the convocation speech at the function.

Fire at CNG filling station

At least two persons were injured seriously and five motor vehicles suffered damage when an oil tanker caught fire at the CNG filling station near the Metropolitan Hospital at Mohakhali yesterday evening.
Muhammad Omar Faruq, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Police Station, told the New Nation that firefighters doused the fire at around 6:30pm.
The fire broke out at around 4.45pm when the tanker was emptying itself into the reserve tank of Aman Enterprise and CNG Filling Station. The reason for the outbreak of fire could not be ascertained immediately.
