Eviction notice on cantt residence: Third HC bench admits Khaleda’s writ: Govt won’t disturb till May 10 hearing

A third High Court (HC) bench yesterday admitted the writ petition of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia challenging the Government's notice asking her to vacate the Dhaka Cantonment residence. The bench comprising Justice Zinnat Ara and Justice Abdul Hakim fixed next Sunday (May 10) for hearing of the petition on Attorney General Mahbubey Alam's assurance that Begum Zia would not be harassed during the time. Earlier, two HC benches felt embarrassed to hear the petition. The bench of Justice Tariqul Hakim and M Azizul Haque first felt embarrassed to hear the petition.  |
Govt firm to ensure balanced development: Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said, her government believes in the balanced development across the country. "We will not deprive the people of Feni and Bogra from development out of revenge that was done during last seven years to the people of Gopalganj including Tongipara, the long neglected area," she said. The Prime Minister said this while exchanging views with the local administration and local elite on development and law and order at Bangabandhu Bhaban here yesterday afternoon. During last seven years, she regretted, Gopalganj was deprived from the development works.  |
Terrorist threat remains in Bangladesh: US envoy Govt, opposition urged to work together

The United States believes that Islamist militancy remains a concern for Bangladesh, US Ambassador James Moriarty said yesterday, a day after opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia said there was no such threat. "We do have disturbing indications. There continues to be threat in Bangladesh and my government does believe that there is a threat," he said at the Meet-the-Reporters programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).  |

The Government has been fetching Taka 1400 crore from import of reconditioned cars every year. But the reconditioned car trade itself had become victim of discriminatory policy of the Government. The policy makers had not yet worked out a definition of the reconditioned car though it was being imported for the last thirty years. In developed countries a car is considered reconditioned on the basis of the cancellation of its first registration. The years on how much it was in use or how much distance it had run were not considered in determining the definition of the reconditioned car.  |
MPs, Upazila Chairmen at loggerheads: Govt mulls separate jurisdictions Rafiqul Islam Azad
Amid the ongoing conflict between Members of Parliament (MPs) and upazila chairmen over exercising power at upazila level, the government is going to issue a guideline within this week working out the jurisdiction of upazila chairmen and vice chairmen, a highly placed source in the Ministry of LGRD said. The LGRD Minister has already given his consent on the proposed guideline and it will be circulated within two to three days, the source said.  |
BGMEA demands uniform facilities for EPZ non-EPZ RMG factories Syful Islam
Garment factories situated outside the Export Processing Zones (EPZs) are getting unequal facilities compared to those located inside the EPZs, resulting them to face various challenges, BGMEA sources said. Factories inside the EPZ, which exports 100 per cent of its production, are enjoying 10-year tax holiday and duty free machineries import facilities. The apex garment body in its budget proposal has urged the government to ensure the facilities for factories situated outside the EPZs.  |
Runaway convicts asked to surrender UNB, Dhaka
In compliance with a recent Supreme Court order, the High Court Sunday asked the bigwig fugitive graft-convicts to surrender to the respective trial courts within two weeks. Justice M Imman Ali of the special HC bench passed the orders while disposing of a bunch of pending bail petitions filed by bigwig fugitive graft-convicts. The special bench was constituted for disposal of the bail petitions as a High Court division bench earlier delivered split orders over it.  |
CPA restricts plying of obsolete vessels from June 1 Chittagong Bureau
Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) is set to impose restrictions upon plying of uncertified and obsolete lighter vessels in the berthing channel, outer anchorage and the adjacent deep sea from June 1 next. The CPA advised the owners of the lighter vessels to procure Bay Crossing Certificate (BCC) from the Department of Mercantile Marine (DMM) for smoother operation of their lighter vessels in the outer anchorage and the adjacent deep sea after the deadline.  |
Nat’l Rabindra Sangeet festival begins May 5

Five-day national Rabindra Sangeet festival titled '20th Jatiyo Rabindra Sangeet Utsab' will begin at Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium of the Central Public Library at Shahbagh in the city on May 5. Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha (BRSSS) will organise the festival like previous years to celebrate the 148th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. This year organisers will give honour to the veteran and noted tabla player Md Shahjahan for his outstanding contribution in the field of Rabindra Sangeet.  |
