Peelkhana carnage: 45,137 ammunition, 209 grenades missing

A total of 45,326 various types of arms and ammunition, including 209 arges grenades, went missing from the BDR headquarters during the February 25-26 mutiny in which 76 people, including 57 army officials, were killed.

"During the carnage, mutineers and killers brought out most of the ammunition from the arsenal and used those indiscriminately," said a BDR headquarters release on Wednesday night regarding the loss of munitions.

Members of Bangladesh Police and Bangladesh Army recovered a number of pieces of the ammunition which were left by the mutineers before fleeing the devastated Peelkhana HQ of the border force. After scrutinizing the ammunition from the kotes, 45,326 various types of ammunition were found missing, the release said.

The missing ammo included 1,712 pistol bullets, 41,733 bullets of Rifle/SMG/LMG, 141 bullets of 9MM SMG, 209 arges grenades, five shells of 60 mm mortar and one shell of 40mm rocket-launcher.

Earlier on April 21, the BDR headquarters said 121 different types of firearms, including 92 pistols, 17 rifles, five sub-machine guns, three point 22-bore rifles, two shotguns and two single-barrel guns went missing from the kote (arsenal) after the carnage.
