Pay Commission report submitted: Maximum salary Tk 45,000 :Minimum Tk 4,300: It's not the year to raise pay as per recommendation: Muhith

The Seventh Pay Commission yesterday submitted its report to the government with a recommendation for enhancing the maximum salary of the government employees to Tk 45,000 from Tk 23,000 and minimum Tk 4,300 from Tk 2,300. The report also kept a provision for the dearness allowance (DA) every year.
Commission Chairman Mir Mostafizur Rahman handed over the report to Minister for Finance Abul Mal Abdul Muhith at the latter's office yesterday. Among others, Finance Secretary Dr Mohammad Tareque and members of the commission were present.

Fugitive convicts have to surrender in trial court
UNB, Dhaka

The Supreme Court yesterday stayed the High Court orders granting interim bail to fugitive graft-convict ex-state minister for Law Barrister Shahjahan Omar of BNP, thereby apparently sealing the fate of other fugitive bigwigs convicted of corruption during the past purge too.
In its orders of cascading impacts, the highest court asked him to surrender before the trial court in two weeks.
On January 14, the High Court granted bail for three months to Shahjahan Omar as he surrendered to it by dodging regular trial-court process.

Capsized vessel master drowns, body found

UNB, Chittagong

Movement of ships to and from Chittagong seaport resumed partially on Thursday morning through a passage created by dredging the bay channel jammed following the capsize of a clinker-laden lighter vessel. In the shipwreck, the master of the vessel drowned and his body was recovered after a hectic search.
Police recovered body of Nurul Bahar, 35, from near jetty no 11 on Wednesday night and sent to Chittagang Medical College Hospital morgue.
Chittagong Port Authority allowed movement of inland vessels from yesterday morning.

Pakistan disorder 'global threat’: Hillary

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has accused Pakistan of abdicating to the Taleban by allowing them to control parts of the country.
Mrs Clinton told a congressional panel the situation in Pakistan posed a "mortal threat" to world security
She said extremists were being allowed to control territory such as the Swat Valley, in north-western Pakistan.
She also called Pakistan's judicial system corrupt, adding that it has only limited power in the countryside.

HSC examinees bear the brunt of power outage

HSC examinees have been passing miserable days due to frequent load shedding.
A one-hour human chain demanding uninterrupted electricity and water supply was formed yesterday in front of Shanirakhra Bus Stand by the members of Demra-Shampur Water Power Struggling Committee.
Fatema Afroz, an HSC examinee, said that she could not prepare her lesson well for the exam because of nagging power outage. "This is the most important exam of my life. But load shedding has been creating problems for my full preparation for the exam", she lamented.
