RAB nabs two top BCL leaders: Protest on DU campus, security beefed up

The members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday arrested two central leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of Awami League (AL), on charge of disrupting academic atmosphere on the Dhaka University (DU) campus.
Director of the legal and media wing of RAB SMAK Azad told The New Nation that members of RAB-3 and intelligence wing of the elite force arrested BCL organising Secretary Ashraful Rahman and international Affairs Secretary Sohel Rana Mithu from a house at Moghbazar in the capital at about 2:30am yesterday suspecting their involvement in disrupting academic atmosphere on the DU campus.

Govt should be cautious about bailout packages: WB

World Bank country director for Bangladesh Xian Zhu yesterday said the government should be cautious in responding to the requests for bailout amid worldwide recession.
He made the comment at a workshop for the Economic Correspondents on 'State of Bangladesh Economy and Policy Response to the Global Financial Crisis' held at the World Bank, Dhaka office.
"The government has received requests for different kinds of bailout packages. In deciding how to respond to these requests, it'll be important to keep in mind that the government is in resource constraint and, therefore, the tradeoffs would have to be made," Xian Zhu said.

Welcome Bangla New Year 1416

Bengali speaking people across the world will celebrate Pahela Baishakh today, the first day of the Bangla year 1416, with much fanfare and enthusiasm.
People from all walks of life will throng in the city's traditional centres of celebration around Ramna Batamul, Suhrawardy Udyan, Shahbagh and Dhaka University campus to welcome the Bangla New Year.
