Ramna Batamul blast: Fake accused galore

Though only 14 persons were believed to have been involved in the bomb attack at the Pahela Baishakh function at Ramna Batamul in Dhaka city some eight years ago, at least 1,000 people were interrogated and harassed in connection with the case.
The bomb blast at Ramna Batamul in April, 2001 cost the lives of ten people.
In the name of fair investigation the investigation officers and others associated with the investigation were stated to have pocketed nearly Tk 25 crore unfairly from the suspects, real or imaginary, in the bomb attack in course of the last eight years.

Residents of Dhaka yesterday have been passing a busy day to carry out their last minute shopping to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, first day of Bangla New Year in a festive mood.
To draw attention of consumers, different fashion houses are decorating their shops with colourful traditional Baishakhi wears including Panjabi, Fatua and sharees.
Anjan's, a fashion house at Basundhara City, decorated its house with traditional Baishakhi dresses including Panjabi and Fatua both for male and female at prices between Tk 350 and Tk 1150, Children Fatua Tk 200 to Tk 425 and three-piece and sharee between Tk 750 and Tk 4,250.

8 JMB militants arrested in city

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday arrested eight militants including three suicide-squad members of a banned Islamist outfit from Khilkhet area in the capital.
RAB also recovered some explosive substances (Power gel), detonators, jihadee leaflets and computer discs from their possession.
The arrested JMB members are : Hasanuzzaman, 26, Abdul Matin alias Zakir, 32, Tariqullah alias Rubel, 20, Anwar Hossain alias Baten, 30, Sumon alias Abdullah, 18, Yusuf Al Asadullah bin Wahidullah,21, Jahidur Rahman alias Jahid, 28, and Abu Sayeed alias Parvez, 25.

ACC bosses, ex-chairman defy JS body summons: Stern action if truants don’t appear in next meet: Alamgir

Defying summons by the parliamentary standing committee on public undertakings, ex-chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission Lt General (Retd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury and serving bosses of the watchdog refrained from appearing in the committee's meeting at Sangsad Bhaban yesterday.
The standing committee served notices upon the ex-ACC chairman Gen Mashhud, acting chairman Habibur Rahman, commissioner Manzur Mannan and former ACC secretary Delwar Hossain to appear before the parliamentary watchdog body during yesterday's meeting to testify on the anti-graft watchdog agency's activities in the last two years.

Retirement age 60 years for workers: PM asks officials to reopen closed mills

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday directed officials concerned to revive closed and sick mills, factories and industries making them profitable to contribute in the government's ongoing development activities.
Laying importance on public and private partnership in this regard, Sheikh Hasina said, this partnership is complementary to each other to greatly help in contributing towards progress and prosperity of the country.
She made the directives while addressing the officials of the Industries Ministry at its conference room at the Motijheel here yesterday morning.

GP to sponsor Pahela Baishakh at Ramna

To celebrate the Bengali New Year, Grameenphone (GP) Ltd is going to sponsor the main cultural event of the Pahela Baishakh festival organised by Chhayanaut at Ramna Batamul at Shahbagh in the city.
This was disclosed at a press conference at Chhayanaut Sangskritik Bhaban at Dhanmondi in the city yesterday.
Noted Nazrul singer and General Secretary of Chhayanaut Khairul Anam Shakil, Treasurer of Chhayanaut Dr Sarwar Ali and DGM of Marketing Communications of GP Ferdousur Rahman spoke at the conference.
