Investment initiatives plummet for uncertain atmosphere

Both local and foreign investment showed a downward trend in March compared to that of February, Board of Investment (BoI) sources say.
Last months data shows a negative investment trend believed to be the effect of BDR mutiny.
The Executive Chairman of BoI Kamaluddin Ahmed hoped that the situation would improve gradually as democratic government has taken the office. Democracy is always good for investment, he said.
BoI statistics show that in March 2009 nearly 55 local industrial investment proposals amounting US$20.

Martyred Army officer's family each to get Tk 40,000 from private banks

BSS, Dhaka

Bankers Association of Bangladesh (BAB) will provide Taka 40,000 per month for the next 10 years to each of the families of army officers martyred in the February 25-26 massacre at BDR headquarters.
The families of the two-army officers-Major General Rafiqul Islam and co-pilot Lt Colonel Shahid- who were killed in a helicopter crash later- have also been included in the BAB donation.

The President met UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown at Downing Street ahead of the G20 summit of world leaders.
Thousands of demonstrators have gathered in the City of London. A few scuffles have broken out as they call for changes in the economic system.
Some protesters got on to the roof of the Bank of England, while windows were broken at a nearby branch of RBS.
Scotland Yard said 23 people had been arrested in connection with the protests.

PM urges Khaleda : Surrender Cantt house for families of slain Army officers

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday hoped opposition leader Khaleda Zia would surrender her cantonment house on eight-nine bighas of land so apartments could be built over there for families of the army officers killed in the BDR mutiny.
"If she does so, I think, the nation will show her more honour," Hasina said responding to supplementary questions from treasury-bench members during the PM's question time in parliament.
Responding to former Law Minister Abdul Matin Khasru, the Prime Minister said it was not correct that the cabinet meeting held on June 12, 1981 had decided to give the cantonment house to Begum Zia.

Madrasha education to be reviewed: Militancy should not have any place: Shafique

Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said that the Government was mulling over inclusion of the Kaumi madrasas within the range of the Education Ministry to facilitate its education system.
The Minister was talking to reporters after launching a workshop on 'Anti-Terrorism Act-2009'organised by Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) at its conference room in the capital.
"Madrasas have been set up for providing only religious education since 1975. These institutions did not incorporate any modern and time-befitting education in their curriculum, he added.

Malaysian visa crisis to be over soon: BAIRA

Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Eng Khandker Mosharraf Hossain yesterday said the government will start monitoring activities of the manpower recruiting agents following the recent visa problems of the Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia.
"We will need three to four months for solving the visa issues of 55,000 Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia," he told reporters at his office in the Ministry.
He said that they held series of meetings with the Malaysian State Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid, Human Resources Minister Subramania and labour organisations to sort out the visa problems.
