3 years needed to ease power supply: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday said it will not be possible to reduce the power supply gap within three years as promised in the election manifesto of the ruling Awami League.
"The most critical issue is power supply. Whatever sector we consider to take forward - be it agriculture or non-agriculture sectors - will not move forward without power," he told a pre-budget meeting with Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) at the NEC conference room.
Muhith made the remarks amid the acute power crisis that has been holding back the growth potentials apart from the challenges of the global recession.

BDR mutiny: Razzak questioned for three hours: 'Many big guns in list for interrogation’

A number of big shots are likely to be interrogated in connection with last month's carnage at the Peelkhana BDR headquarters.
Nesarul Arif, police superintendent of the CID and in charge of the case, said yesterday that a good many people may be required to be questioned in the interest of the case."
A lot of big guns we may need to quiz as the case unfolds," Nesarul told reporters after grilling Jama'at-e-Islami leader Abdur Razzak at the CID headquarters yesterday.
Meanwhile, The high-powered committee probing the rebellion in the paramilitary force has found clues of "third party" involvement in the bloodbath.

Dhaka-KL reach accord on workers: Legislation to tighten recruitment without job availability

Malaysia and Bangladesh yesterday reached an understanding to tighten legislation to ensure that Bangladeshi workers for the Malaysian manufacturing and plantation sectors are not recruited without the availability of jobs for them, according to a report carried out by a Malaysian news agency.
Malaysian National News Agency BERNAMA. quoted Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam as saying that Bangladesh had given the assurance that it would enforce legislation strictly to monitor the activities of employment agencies in that country.

Probe body gets 30 more days

UNB, Dhaka

The government probe body, headed by former secretary M Anisuzzaman Khan, was given 30 working days more to complete the investigation into the February 25-26 BDR carnage.
In a notification issued by the Home Ministry yesterday, the government extended the time for the third time since March 2 as the task could not be completed even within the extended timeframe.
"The investigation committee was given the time for further appropriate investigation into the BDR carnage," Home Minister Sahara Khatun told reporters at her office in the afternoon.

SMEs to help remove unemployment

Minister for Industries Dilip Barua yesterday said national development, prosperity and progress could not be ensured unless unemployment is removed from the country.
"New employment must be created by means of promoting small and medium enterprises to achieve economic progress," the minister said while exchanging views with the executives of SME Foundation on Sunday.
Emphasising the need for increasing income and purchasing power of people in order to increase the GDP, the industries minister said, "We have to emphasise upon growth of Small and Medium Enterprises for achieving the target.
