Student groups fight for supremacy: Public varsities, colleges erupt like volcanoes

Most of the state run universities and colleges across the country including the apex Dhaka University are gradually getting tourmoiled as Bangladesh Chhattra League (BCL), student organisations of the ruling party Awami League (AL), has become aggressive to establish supremacy over different campuses.
This has so happened despite Prime Minister and party chief Sheikh Hasina's warning that BCL units should refrain from creating violence in campuses.

Pakistan's opposition leader defied house arrest on Sunday to lead anti-government protests that briefly turned violent before becoming a jubilant show of force against the country's pro-Western president. Opposition leader Nawaz Sharif called the mass rally a "prelude to a revolution."
The power struggle between the former prime minister Syed Yusuf Raja Geelani and President Asif Ali Zardari threatens to paralyze the government and, alarmingly for the U.S., distract the nuclear-armed country from its fight against Taliban militants operating along the Afghan border.

Bashundhara fire remains a mystery: Probe body visits accident site

The probe committee is yet to ascertain the reasons behind the outbreak of fire at the 20-storey Bashundhara City Complex on Panthapath on Friday.
The three-member probe committee headed by Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (police), Ministry of Home Affairs, was constituted by the government to dig out the reasons of the fire and submit its report within seven days.
The probe committee visited the spot on Saturday and Sunday and tried to unfold the mystery as to why 150 close circuit cameras at different floors of the city complex were inoperative at the time outbreak of fire and why hydraulic lifts failed to function during the period.

Package to face impact of recession: PM

UNB, Dhaka

Prime Minister Sheikh on Sunday said the government would offer special package for the business sectors to save country's economy from any probable negative impact of the current economic recession worldwide.
"Already the ministries concerned have been directed to identify the problems that might be created following the world economic recession. After identifying the problems, government will chalk out plans and offer package programmes for the business sectors," she said.

Suranjit again in spotlight as voice of dissent

The senior leaders of the Awami League in a review meeting on Saturday warned presidium member Suranjit Sen Gupta for his utterance that the two-month government of Awami League is a 'house of freshers' (Kanchi Kachar Asar). He was reminded that whatever decision is taken in the Awami League is owned by the party Chief Sheikh Hasina and nothing goes unnoticed by her. Whatever happened in the party is within her knowledge. No leader of the party will speak and do anything which will tarnish the image of the party. Everyone in the party will abide by the party discipline.

Citycell Super Cup Football: Dhaka Abahani emerge as group champions
UNB, Dhaka

Dhaka Abahani emerged group A champion to reach semifinal with all win record in the Citycell Super Cup football beating Sheikh Russell KC by 3-0 goals in the group A match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) on Sunday.
With this day's feat, Dhaka Abahani secured nine points while Sheikh Russell, made early exit in the tournament with three points from three matches.
Earlier, in another group A match, Chittagong Mohammedan confirmed their semi final berth beating Rahmatganj MFS by 2-0 goals at the same venue.

JCD submits memo to DU VC
DU Correspondent
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor of the Dhaka University yesterday calling for implementation of its 6-point demands.
The demands include stopping harassment of general students especially JCD activists on the DU campus and at different halls, ending partisan conduct of the university administration and punishment of those involved in criminal activities on the campus.
JCD central president Azizul Bari Helal and General Secratary Shafiul Bari Babu were present on the occasion 0f submitting memorandum to the VC.

Commentary: Zardari and Justice Iftikhar should save situation in Pakistan
Although grave threats from the Taliban and their staunch external enemies marked by occasional missile attacks on the Islamist targets inside Pakistan has been viewed very dangerous signals for the integrity of the country, political infighting may turn out to be the most fatal unless some curative steps are taken right now.
According to reports, Pakistan's opposition leader defied house arrest on Sunday to join anti-government protests that quickly descended into violence and chaos, with running battles between stone-throwing protesters and police.
