14 killed, 28 injured in road accidents

At least 14 people were killed and 28 others injured in separate road accidents in different districts in the country yesterday.

In Magura, a Kolkata bound coach from the capital crashed into a roadside ditch

in the yesterday morning leaving three people dead, including mother and son, and injured 20 others.

According to police, the bus skidded off at Kochhundi about 8 kilometres away from the district town leaving the three dead on the spot and injured 20 others.

The dead were identified as Kamala Ghosh, 68, and her son Prashanta Ghosh, 35, hailed from Lalbagh in the capital, and Abu Taher, 55, of Fatikchhari upazila in Chittagong district.

Six of the injured passengers of the bus were admitted to Sadar hospital in with critical injuries.

At least four people, three of them of a family, were killed when a truck skidded off the Khulna-Satkhira road after one of its tyres deflated at Kanchanpur in the afternoon.

Police said the truck turned turtle over the three family members two women and a child near Kanchanpur Primary School at about 2pm. The three and the truck helper died instantly.

The dead were identified as Taslima Begum, 22, her daughter Meem, 5, and mother-in-law Zohra Begum, 46, and truck-helper Rampada, 35.

In Jamalpur three people dead and eight others injured as a bus ploughed into a roadside shop at Digpait on the Dhaka-Jamalpur highway in the early hours on Saturday.

Police said the Dhaka-bound bus from Madarganj crashed into a shop as its driver lost control over the steering.

Uzzal, 22, of Digpait village and Julhas, 35, of Pughloi village in Sadar upazila, who were waiting for bus beside the road, died on the spot.

Another person also by the name of Uzzal, aged 30, of Ramnagar village in Sadar upazila died on way to hospital.

The injured were admitted to the district general hospital. Condition of five of them was stated "critical".

The driver and the helper of the bus fled the scene speedily driving away the bus.

In Bagerhat, a covered van smashed a motorcycle at Megnitala in Sadar upazila in the yesterday afternoon, killing its two riders.

The dead were identified as Wahiduzzaman, 40, and Saroj Biswas, 42, of Rampal upazila.

Police said the bike riders were going to Bagerhat district town from Rampal when tragedy struck them both down.

Another two motorcyclists, one of them Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raiganj upazila LSD (Local Supply Depot), were killed in Sirajganj as a speeding truck knocked them down at Sholomail in the upazila in the morning.

Police said a Dhaka-bound goods-laden truck from Bogra rammed the bicycle at about 11am, killing OC Mohammed Ali, 40, and Saidul, 35, on the spot.

On information, police recovered and sent their bodies to hospital morgue for autopsy.
