Hiring lawyers: PM orders probe into ACC spending

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday said "rationality and righteousness" of the spending of a huge amount of money for hiring lawyers by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will have to be investigated.
The Prime Minister expressed the view when a UN delegation led by Assistant Secretary-General Ajay Chhibber called on her at the PM Office in the morning, when they discussed matters related to the process of Bangladesh's transition to democracy among other issues.
Resident Representative of UNDP Renata Lok Dessalien, Country Director Stefan Priesner and Policy Adviser Megnus Lundgren were on the UN delegation.

Wind of change in Foreign Ministry: Reshuffle underway

A big reshuffle is underway in the Foreign Ministry following induction of Hasina-led government on January 6. Bangladesh Ambassador to USA Humayun Kabir has been called back to Dhaka. He is likely to replace Touhid Hossain as the foreign secretary while Touhid Hossain will succeed Humayun Kabir as ambassador to Washington. Humayun Kabir was earlier ambassador to Nepal and Australia. Maruf Zaman, Ambassador to Vietnam, has also been summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka from where he will be sent abroad for new assignment.

Train-truck collision 13 killed, 50 hurt in Joypurhat

A passenger train has crashed into a truck on Kashiabari level crossing in Joypurhat, killing at least 13 people and injuring about 50 others.
Police and witnesses said the Khulna-bound 'rocket mail' from Syedpur rammed the sand-laden truck at about 12:05 pm while the lorry trying to cross the unmanned rail crossing. "Eight people died instantly and around 50 others were injured in the fatal accident," said many a witness to the grim scene of violent collision in which the truck was reduced to wrecks.

JU BCL unit dissolved: Security tightened on campus

The Jahangirnagar University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was dissolved yesterday following Monday's incident of armed clash between two rival groups of the organization.
The Central Committee of the BCL, associate organisation of ruling Awami League, dissolved its JU unit on Tuesday. The central president Mahmud Hasan Ripon confirmed it over telephone.
He also told The New Nation that they had already asked the university authorities to take academic and legal actions against the perpetrators of the incident.
