City wears festive look as Spring steps in

Thousands of city dwellers, mostly youngsters, came out onto the street yesterday to welcome the advent of the spring, king of the seasons wearing colourful dresses, men carrying flowers in their hands and women on their bun. Pahela Falgun, the first day of spring in the Bangla seasonal chain, received warm welcome with colour, songs and dance. It begins with colour and festivities in the minds of people, lighting up the spring on hearts of all, irrespective of age, life and living, who embraced the carefree environment spraying the spring colours and fragrances.  |
Fate of caretaker ordinances: JS may nod 50, others may die Rafiqul Islam Azad
Around 50, out of 122 ordinances promulgated during the caretaker government, might be considered during the current session of Parliament ending February 26. "Work in progress to produce the ordinances being scrutinised by the special committee in the form of bill to place in the House for consideration," said Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Barrister Shafiq Ahmed. Talking to The New Nation last night the Minister said the special committee formed earlier to scrutinise the ordinances will meet tomorrow and decide which ones would be placed before Parliament for consideration.  |

Welcome, new President

Bangladesh has now a new President, the 19th in its history as an independent country. Janab Zillur Rahman, a senior politician of the country, has taken the oath of the President and Prof. Iajuddin, the former President has retired from office. With this change the curtain has come down on a tainted chapter in the annul of presidentship in Bangladesh. Under Prof. Iajuddin the office of the President became tarnished and devalued because of what he did towards the end of 2006. Contrary to the tradition of the office, he made himself abjectly partisan and thereby became highly controversial.  |
Valentine Day today

The Valentine Day will be observed across the country today amid exchange of flowers and gifts among the lovers.
Different organisations in the city have organised elaborate programmes for observing the day in a befitting manner in the capital today.
Wonderland Amusement, Capital Club, Gulshan Club and Jaijaidin Club are some of the organisations, which have chalked programmes in observance of the occasion.
The programmes of the Dhaka University students will be mainly held at the TSC, Charukola and Bot Tola.  |
Zillur pays homage to Bangabandhu, martyrs

President Zillur Rahman passed his first day as the head of the state by paying homage to independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and placing wreaths at the National Mausoleum at Savar yesterday. He laid wreaths before Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's portrait at Bangabandhu Smriti Jadughar at around 10:30 am and stood in silence for a moment there. From there the president drove straight to Savar to pay respect to the martyrs who had sacrificed their lives in the war of independence. On his arrival at 11.  |

Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus yesterday urged the BUET (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) students to work on problems of Bangladesh, as they have the scope to understand the issues like poverty and solve them through innovative technology. He said the rapid advance in technology, especially the information technology, can be used by the students to spread their ideas across the globe and help poor. He urged BUET students to be more creative in their thought and innovative in finding out ways to take advanced technology to the poor.  |
Book Fair draws huge crowd

Hundreds of city's dwellers visited the "Amar Ekushey Book Fair-2009" at Bangla Academy premise yesterday on its 13th day. Yesterday was the 1st Falgun and different organisations organised different programmes in the Dhaka University campus to mark the day. So a huge number of the people visited the University area. Bangla Academy is situated in the university area and hundreds of people were Book Fair-bound. Yesterday also was the weekly holiday. The concerned authority took all out measures to ensure security for the visitors.  |
49 killed in New York plane crash

Flames silhouetted the shattered home after Continental Connection Flight 3407 plummeted into it around 10:20 p.m. "The whole sky was lit up orange," said Bob Dworak, who lives less than a mile from the crash site. "All the sudden, there was a big bang, and the house shook." The 74-seat Q400 Bombardier aircraft was carrying 5,000 pounds of fuel and apparently exploded on impact, Erie County Executive Chris Collins said.  |
Commentary: Iran has "unclenched its fist" for peaceful cooperation Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's assertion that the world is entering a "new era of dialogue" and his country would welcome talks based on mutual respect with the United States, seems to be a welcome response to US President Barack Obama's softening of foreign policy stance. Ahmadinejad's announcement came on 10 February marking the 30th anniversary of Islamic revolution in his country, a day after President Barack Obama said his administration was looking for opportunities to engage Iran and pledged to rethink U.S. relationship with Tehran.  |
