Two accords with India signed: Promoting bilateral trade, investment aimed at

Bangladesh and India yesterday signed two important deals with a view to boosting up trade and investment between the two countries.
The deals named the Bilateral Trade Agreement and the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement were signed at a ceremony held at Hotel Sheraton after three-hour long formal talks between the two sides at the state guesthouse Padma.
Visiting Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee signed both the agreements on behalf of India while Bangladesh Commerce Minister Lt Col (Retd) Faruk Khan signed the Bilateral Trade Agreement and Industries Minister Dilip Barua the other.

EC declares valid Zillur’s nomination for President

UNB, Dhaka

The Election Commission declared valid the nomination of elderly Awami League leader Zillur Rahman as the lone candidate for the presidency after scrutiny yesterday, apparently making him President-elect.
Polling for the presidential elections was slated for February 16 under the schedule, but there will be no need of voting by the MPs as there is no contestant against Zillur Rahman.
Chief Whip of Parliament vice-principal Abdus Shaheed, after attending the scrutiny of nomination papers, told reporters that the Election Commission validated the nomination filing of the veteran AL leader.

DSE witnesses sharp fall in share prices
UNB, Dhaka

The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) witnessed a sharp fall yesterday, adding fuel to the bearish market and prompting the general investors to take to the street.
The demonstrators, numbering over a hundred, brought out a procession from in front of the bourse at around 12 noon, protesting the continuous fall in the share prices.
The DSE General Index (DGEN), the benchmark index, shed 78 points or about 3 percent to close at 2,520 Monday from 2,598 Sunday, which is a biggest single-day fall in over last two months.

Deal to enhance business: Faruk

Commerce Minister Faruk Khan yesterday said that Bangladesh and India has signed bilateral trade deal to enhance business between the two countries.
He said the signing was extension of agreement of a 1980 deal that was signed by the then BNP government and extended in every 3 years. In 2001 some changes were brought in the agreement due to South Asian free Trade Agreement (SAFTA).
Terming the deal as framework agreement Faruk said, if necessary, after bilateral discussion the both countries will be able to extend the agreement and start new businesses.

BB Governor asks banks: Take steps to give loans to women-run SMEs
BSS, Dhaka

Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Salehuddin Ahmed on Monday asked the commercial banks to take bold steps towards giving loans to women-run SME projects at 10 percent interest.
He said women entrepreneurs are not getting adequate loans, nor at 10 percent rate from commercial banks for the SME projects as per the central bank's directives.
He stressed the need for a change of the outlook of bankers to bring easy credit to women investors.
The governor said women entrepreneurs are more effectively using bank loans to justify the easiest ways of reaching more credit to them to build new projects or expand existing ones.
