US offers help to protect sea areas: We are not interested to set up military base: Boucher

The United States is not on the lookout for setting up military base in Bangladesh's territorial waters but offered its assistance for maritime patrol so the country can better protect her sea areas. "Modalities will have to be worked out. We are here to offer our assistance. I think there are some interests in maritime control so you can protect your sea areas better," he told a press conference at Zia international airport, capping his wide-ranging talks with Bangladesh leaders during his 2-day visit.  |
Pranab arrives today: Trade, security, water issues top on agenda

Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will arrive today in Bangladesh for a daylong tour in the first visit by a top Indian leader after the new Sheikh Hasina government came to power. Trade, security and water issues will top the agenda during Pranab Mukherjee's visit, said Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty told reporters Sunday, after a meeting with home minister advocate Sahara Khatun. "So far we are looking at two agreements. One is the trade agreement, the other is the bilateral investment promotion and protection agreement," he said.  |
Zillur lone candidate for president

Veteran Awami League leader Zillur Rahman MP is going to be elected as the next President of the Republic of Bangladesh on February 11 as no one has submitted nomination paper for the post to the EC by Sunday, the last date of filing the paper. Chief Whip Md Abdus Shahid yesterday noon submitted Zillur Rahman's nomination form to the Chief Election Commissioner, Dr ATM Shamsul Huda, also the Chief Returning Officer, for the presidential poll. Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury proposed Zillur's name as candidate for the president and Shahid supported him in the nomination paper, sources said.  |

He is learnt to have consented to the new idea as conveyed by his younger brother GM Kader, now Tourism Minister of the AL-led Mohajote government. City roundup told: Transit, TIFA will cause harm to country

Giving 'transit' to India in the guise of 'corridor' through a hurried decision would be 'suicidal' for the people and the country, said speakers at a discussion in the city yesterday. They also called upon the government to be conscious in the interest of people and the country. If the proposed South Asia Task Force, Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) and transit are allowed to pass then it will cause harm to the country and people, it was observed. The speakers also opined that the transit and task force could be formed multilaterally and within the framework of SAARC.  |
Rule violation at Boi mela: 4 stalls cancelled

The management of the Ekushey Book Fair cancelled the allocation of four stalls and warned 20 more for violating the rules and regulations of the fair. It also took decision to increase the number of stalls on the roadside behind the academy premises that connects Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) and Curzon Hall. This year, around one hundred stalls have already been allotted on the road side as academy lost space at its main premises due to construction work of a new building. Publishers who were blacklisted last year for violating rules at the fair also get space for stalls this times giving undertaking.  |
Govt steps to free JN Varsity halls soon

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday assured the students of the Jagannath University that the Government would take steps to free the residential halls of the University from occupiers immediately. He gave the assurance to the students of the university at his office following the student's consecutive agitation. The students demanded that their fellow students, who were arrested during a protest, be freed and the cases against them be withdrawn.  |
