RAB copter still elusive: Anti-smuggling drive needs boost

The final decision to equip the elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) with a modern helicopter to combat serious crime, check border smuggling and contain terrorism is still hanging in balance. Informed sources said that though the decision to provide a helicopter to RAB was taken about three years ago it was yet to be materialised. The process for procuring a modern helicopter from France can be expedited if the home ministry takes initiative in this respect, the sources added.  |
Obama’s overture to Muslims

President Barack Obama has done something which none of his predecessors could even think of as necessary and important. In his inaugural address he reached out to the Muslim world to give assurance about building a relation based on mutual interest and mutual respect. As if to drive home the point he pronounced his middle name 'Hussain' loud and clear, telling the Muslim world that he has some connection to them, even if nominally. Unlike many of his predecessors, Barack Obama did not choose words in his inaugural address for rhetorical effect.  |
Akheri Munajat today

The three-day-long Ijtema, the largest congregation of Tablig-e-Jamaat, is going to be concluded today with the 'Akheri Munajat', which began after the Fazr prayer on Friday on the bank of river Turag. Hundreds of thousands of devotees yesterday passed the second day of Ijtema listening to sermons delivered by Islamic scholars seeking blessings from the almighty Allah. Maulana Abdul Wahab from Pakistan delivered the day's first sermon after Fazr prayers while Maulana Mosharraf Hossain from Bangladesh delivered his sermon after Zohr prayers.  |
PM opens Ekushey Book Fair today

The month-long "Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2009" begins today at the Bangla Academy premises in the city. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the fair at 3:00pm. Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar will broadcast the Inaugurate ceremony. The owner of Muktodhara Publishing House Late Chittaranjan Saha initiated the Amar Ekushey Book Fair in 1972 by opening a centre in front of Bangla Academy.  |
Saraswati puja celebrated

Saraswati Puja, one of the main religious festivals of Bangali Hindus, was celebrated across the country amid religious fervour and festivity. As Saraswati is considered as the Goddess of wisdom and knowledge, Hindu devotees, especially students, celebrated the Saraswati Puja in different educational institutions and temples. In the capital, the Puja was arranged at Jagannath Hall of Dhaka University, DU dormitories of girls, Dhaka College, Eden Girls College, Dhakeswari Mandir, Siddheswari Temple, Ramkrishna Mission and temples in Tantibazar, Shankharibazar, Banglabazar, Mohakhali and Farmgate areas in the city.  |
CCC move to commercialise school building protested

Public opinion against Chittagong City Corporation's (CCC) move to build commercial complex at the premises of two prestigious girls' high schools - Aparna Charan and Krishna Kumari - at downtown port city is growing stronger day by day. Ninety-seven-years-old revolutionary Binod Bihari Chowdhury yesterday lent his support to the civil society people that had been opposing the CCC's move and drumming up public opinion against the planned demolition of the schools especially important from the historical perspective.  |
Photo lovers’ paradise

The city has turned into a photo lovers' paradise for with every major gallery exhibiting works from around the world as Dhaka hosts Chobi Mela V or International Festival of Photography, Bangladesh 2009. Two exhibitions were inaugurated at Drik Gallery yesterday, Gallery-1 holding a show titled 'Buena Memoria' by Argentine photographer Marcelo Brodsky. A look into the young days of the photographer, the show is a nostalgic journey into days lost in the endless abyss of time. Gallery-2 featured 'Bangladesh 1971', presenting photographic document of the liberation struggle.  |
Journalist Rousseau dead
BSS, Dhaka
Mahbubur Rahman Rousseau, a senior journalist and former assistant editor of now-defunct the Bangladesh Times, died of a cardiac arrest at United Hospital in the city Friday night at the age of 63. He left behind his wife, a son and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death. Rousseau was the 3rd son of late Principal BM Rahman of Bikrampur. Among eight brothers, Dr Mizanur Rahman Shelly, a former minister and well-acclaimed researcher in the country, is his eldest brother.  |
