CU remains locked up, BCL students mount pressure

The administrative big shots of Chittagong University (CU) have apparently failed to find a way out from the deadlock arising out of the siege laid by the-Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student front of Awami League and its allies on the second consecutive day on Saturday. Main entrances of the faculty buildings, registrar's office and different institutes had been under lock and key till the time of dispatching this report on Sunday evening.  |
Hasina seeks more US investment in energy sector

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday urged the United States to invest in Bangladesh in larger volume and emphasized on more US cooperation in energy and power sectors of the country. The request came when US Ambassador in Dhaka James F Moriarty called on the Prime Minister at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in the morning. Hasina assured the US Ambassador of investment-friendly environment in the country and Moriarty also expressed interest for more investment from his country.  |
Andaman tragedy: Hundreds feared dead at sea

India said Sunday that hundreds of people were missing at sea, believed to be part of a wave of boat people allegedly dragged out to the middle of the ocean by Thailand and left to die. Thailand has denied the accusations, but accounts of survivors and the latest reports from the Indian coast guard have piled the pressure on Bangkok, and the Thai government said it would meet rights groups on Monday. The Thai Navy is accused of detaining the migrants, from a Muslim ethnic minority in Myanmar, after they washed up on the Thai coast-and then towing them to sea and leaving them to their fate.  |

Zia’s 73rd birth anniversary today

BNP is going to celebrate the 73rd birth anniversary of the founder of the party Shaheed president Ziaur Rahman with due respect and solemnity across the country. To mark the day, BNP and its front organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes by placing floral wreaths at the mazar of president Zia. Recitation of holy Quran, Milad Mahfil, hosting of party flag and child painting competition are among the programmes. Begum Khaleda Zia, chairperson of the party and other senior leaders and activists is schedule to lay wreaths at the mazar of Ziaur Rahman at Zia Uddin in the city.  |
DITF draws huge crowd

The Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) 2009 is gaining momentum as a large number of visitors thronged Sunday, the 18th day of the trade extravaganza. Both on Friday and Saturday large number of customers and visitors also thronged the fair ground. Organiser Export Promotion Bureau sources said nearly 1.5 lakh visitors come to fair every day to buy household appliances, cosmetics winter clothes, cellular phone services, jewellery, handicrafts, dairy products, food and groceries, gift items, toys, stationery and plastic products.  |
