The air buzzes with slogans. Colourful banners, festoons and emblems deck the processions as they advance through the narrow alleys of the city. These are no protest rallies which are a common sight in our country. Advocating the candidacy of particular individuals such campaigns are at present a common sight all over Bangladesh since the Parliamentary Election 2008 is just round the corner. However, the upcoming Parliamentary Election is unlike any election that has been held so far in Bangladesh. New electoral laws, last lag of emergency, people’s perception regarding corruption and inclusion of new voters have made this election different from other elections. Even though campaigns of all political parties including the two major alliances are in full swing yet they have a different look. No huge multicoloured banners, no microphones continuously blaring party propaganda, no gift and memento distribution during house visits, no constant road blockage for meetings and hence lesser traffic jams. Everything this time is peaceful and much organized. Yet every one is eagerly awaiting the arrival of 29th December when the political fate of the country will be decided by the citizens.
