RAB, militants gunfight in Comilla: Khaleda smells conspiracy to kill her, 4 grenades recovered

Former premier and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday said the grenades recovered by RAB from Debidwar upazila in Comilla during her election campaign there were meant to assassinate her and disrupt the forthcoming parliament elections to turn the tide of mass support for the 'sheaf of paddy'.
"Having failed to send me abroad, they are now trying to eliminate me from the earth," she told an election rally at the Raipur Merchant Academy premises in Laxmipur-2 constituency last night.

What could have been a more startling disclosure than that of Ajam J Chowdhury, the principal accuser of three-crore taka extortion case against Hasina, the former prime minister, visiting her and her sister, Sheikh Rehana at Sudha Sadan residence Saturday. He was reported to have explained under what circumstances he has to file extortion case against the former prime minister compelling her to go behind the bar for 11 months. His sojourn to Sudha Sadan came 6 days after filing a petition to Home Ministry seeking permission to withdraw the case.

Grenade attack on British HC: Mufti Hannan, 2 others to die

A court has sentenced three Islamist militants to death and two others to life in prison for a grenade attack in 2004 that killed three people and wounded a former British high commissioner Anwar Choudhury in Sylhet.
Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Shamim Mohammad Afzal handed down the verdict at 2:45pm after the five accused were produced before the court at 2:17 pm from custody.
"All in the dock were unmoved," says an eyewitness account of the scene of judgment.

Pvt sector to be driving force of economy: Hasina

Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina at a view exchange meeting yesterday with the business community urged the business leaders to come forward with financial assistance for the socio-economic and infrastructure development activities.
She was addressing the meeting titled 'Charter for changing days: Vision 2021' at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel.
She also urged them to create jobs for the rural poor to ensure effective development of society as poverty is the key problem of the country. She also pleaded for establishing manufacturing plants based on local needs.
