Sabotage attacks to foil polls feared: Law-enforcers alerted Staff Reporter
In addition to early deployment of army troops from today, the members of the law enforcing agencies have been alerted across the country apprehending sabotage attacks ahead of the December 29 parliamentary elections, according to reliable sources. They have been alerted in the city and elsewhere in the country to frustrate any possible sabotage attacks. Ministry of Home Affairs is learnt to have sent directives to the Superintendent of Police (SP) of all the 64 districts in this regard. The Ministry also asked the BDR and immigration police to remain alert and discharge duties carefully.  |

Finance Adviser AB Mirza Azizul Islam echoed the Chief Election Commissioner when he said that the fate of the loan defaulters, who are contesting in the parliamentary elections backed by Court orders, is still not safe. "The fate of loan defaulters now rests with the higher court, the Adviser told reporters before leaving the inaugural session of a two-year departmental training course for 23 junior officials of the 27th batch of BCS Audit and Accounts Cadre at the Financial Management Academy (FIMA).  |

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia yesterday urged the people to vote for `sheaf of paddy' in the December 29 elections to restore democracy and safeguard the country's independence and sovereignty. "The sheaf of paddy is not only a poll symbol, it is the symbol of development, independence and sovereignty," she told a huge election rally at Majhira High School ground. Thousands of people from different walks of life greeted Begum Zia chanting slogans and waving banners, festoons, placards and BNP's poll symbol `sheaf of paddy' when she arrived at the meeting venue at around 1:45 pm.  |
