President urges Sudan to recruit Bangladeshi agro-experts

President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed on Monday urged the Sudanese government to recruit agro-experts from Bangladesh to expedite their agricultural development.

"Sudan can recruit Bangladeshi experts to meet some of their needs, especially in agriculture, IT, pharmaceuticals, education and other sectors," he said while Ambassador of Sudan to Bangladesh Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman made a farewell call on him at Bangabhaban here.

The President welcomed the outgoing ambassador at the Bangabhaban and praised him for his sincere endeavors in further strengthening relations between the two brotherly countries during his tenure.

He said Bangladesh would like to work for closer ties with Sudan in the fields of economy, agriculture, education and trade.

"Sudan can import Bangladeshi world class standard products including ships, pharmaceuticals, readymade garments and ceramics at competitive prices," Prof Iajuddin said.

The President suggested that Khartoum could share the experience of Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus's micro credit programme in Bangladesh to alleviate poverty in Sudan.

The President emphasized the exchange of visits by experts, teachers and students for further enhancing the bilateral cooperation and relations between the two countries.

Prof Iajuddin told the envoy that the country's upcoming general elections would be held in a free, fair and credible manner on December 29.

Ambassador Ali Osman stated that the existing bilateral relations between Sudan and Bangladesh are excellent and it would be further strengthened in the days to come.

The envoy highly praised the role of Bangladeshi UN peacekeepers in Sudan and said the peacekeepers are helping Sudanese people in various ways.

He expressed sincere gratitude and thanks to the Bangladesh government for their support to strengthen the military cooperation between the two countries.

The envoy also thanked the people of Bangladesh for providing sincere support and cooperation in discharging his duties.

Secretary of the President's Office Md Sirajul Islam, Military Secretary to the President Major General Mohammad Ruhul Amin and President's Press Secretary Abdul Awal Howlader were present.




JU Alumni Assoc formed

A 15-member convening committee of Jahangirnagar University Alumni Association (JUAA) was formed at a meeting at the Central Cafeteria of the university recently.

Md Kaikobad Hossain was made convener, Rashedul Hasan Masum joint convener, Mozammel Islam Chowdhury Taslim member secretary and Altaf Hossain Bishwas joint member secretary at the meeting.

Members of the convening committee are: Sadrul Alam Harun, Mozammel Haq, Akhtar Ahmed Rasha, Anwar Hossain Belu, Abu Hasan, Md Shamsul Alam Selim, Rokon Siddiqui, Khandoker M Shariful Huda Ripon, M Sakhawat Hossain Swapan, M Sabir Hossain and Mahmudunnabi Mamun, said a press release.


Iajuddin greets Kazakh President

President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed on Monday conveyed his warm greetings and felicitations to the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbaev on the occasion of his country's Independence Day that falls today.

In a message, the President expressed his firm conviction that the existing bonds of relation between the two countries should be strengthened and consolidated to the mutual benefit of the two peoples in the days to come.

He also wished good health, happiness and long life of the Kazakh President and for continued peace, progress and prosperity for the brotherly people of Kazakhstan.

Chief Adviser Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed has extended his warmest greetings to Kazakhstan Prime Minister Karim Kajimkanovich Masimov on the occasion of his country's Independence Day.

In a message on the eve of the occasion, the Chief Adviser expressed the conviction that the existing bonds of friendship between the two brotherly countries would be deepened to the mutual benefit of the two peoples in the days ahead.

Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed wished good health, happiness and long life of the Kazakh prime minister and continued peace, progress and prosperity for the brotherly people of Kazakhstan.





Victory Day programme of

Bangladesh Armed Forces

Members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces will join the nation in celebrating the great Victory Day in a befitting manner today.

The day's programme will begin with a 31 gun salute at sunrise at the old Airport in the city, said an ISPR press release.

Special munajat will be offered at all mosques of Army, Navy and Air Forces all over the country seeking divine blessings for peace and progress of the country and development of the armed forces.

President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed will place floral wreaths at the National Mausoleum at Savar at sunrise. Members of the Army, Navy and Air Force will pay guard of honour.

National Flag will be hoisted atop services headquarters and the Armed Forces installations. Important buildings of the armed forces will be illuminated in the evening.

Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force bands will play patriotic and popular songs at Crescent Lake (Sangsad Bhaban Area), Farm Gate Park Area and Mirpur Stadium respectively from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm.

Besides, a few ships of the Bangladesh Navy will be kept open to visitors from 2.00 pm to sunset in Dhaka (Sadarghat), Chittagong, Khulna, Mongla, Barisal and Narayanganj.





Training on

'human rights'

concludes

The two-day training course on 'Human Rights' ended at the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Headquarters here on Monday under the joint auspices of the US Embassy and the RAB Headquarters.

A training team from the United States led by Ed Flick (Chief of PACOM Augmentation Team) imparted the training to a group of 12 RAB personnel from the assistant director to the director levels, a RAB press release said.

Director General of RAB Hassan Mahmud Khandaker distributed the certificates among the trainees. US Ambassador to Bangladesh James F Moriarty was also present.

Speaking on the occasion, RAB DG praised the US government for providing the training which he said would help increase efficiency of the members of the elite force. He expressed the hope that the US government would continue to support RAB in increasing its efficiency in the future.

James F Moriarty commended the overall activities of RAB including ensuring security of the people of Bangladesh and curbing terrorism in society. He assured his government's continued support to RAB.

RAB additional director general Colonel Gulzar Uddin Ahmed and high officials of the US Embassy were present, among others, on the occasion.
