Martyred Intellectuals’ Day today

The nation will observe the Martyred Intellectuals Day today to mourn for the Bengali intellectuals and professionals brutally killed on this day in 1971 by the then Pakistani occupation army and their local collaborators at the fag-end of Bangladesh Liberation War.
With defeat looming large, the occupation forces and their lackeys-Razakar, Al-Badr and Al-Shams-abducted frontline Bengali intellectuals and professionals on December 14, 1971 and killed them to cripple the newborn nation intellectually.

Khaleda promises responsible politics: 36-point manifesto: SPA to be scrapped

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) yesterday announced the party's manifesto vowing to build a self-reliant country free from hunger, corruption and terrorism.
She called upon the people to re-elect her party in the forthcoming elections on December 29 to save the country from the current deep crisis stemming from misrule of the last two years.
BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia formally announced the manifesto with the slogan: "Save the Country, Save the People" which promises to establish a responsible and accountable political system in the country.

Matia opens AL media centre: Pledges media freedom, security of journalists

Awami League (AL) presidium member Begum Matia Chowdhury yesterday said AL always believed in absolute freedom of the press and would take all necessary steps to ensure complete freedom of mass media if voted to power.
Matia made this comments while addressing the newsmen at the inaugural ceremony of the party's Media center in Dhanmondi.
Although party chief Sheikh Hasina was scheduled to inaugurate the media center, but due to her illness she could not attend the function.
Matia also gave the assurance to ensure maximum security of life for the newsmen, if AL assumes the office.

BNP, AL manifestoes differ more in approaches than substance

With the two major political parties, the Bangladesh Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party announcing their election manifestoes on Friday and Saturday the people now have an opportunity to compare the programmes they have vowed to implement.
The AL has termed its manifesto 'a charter for change', while the BNP has initiated the document with a slogan, 'save the country, save the people'. While the BNP manifesto is a 36-point charter of promises, the AL manifesto contains 23 broad pledges placed against the backdrop of a vision for Bangladesh by the year 2021.

Leading economists, business leaders and educationists have lauded the manifesto of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) which was announced by party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia yesterday. They observed that there is a positive approach in the manifesto giving priority particularly on economic development of the country.
In his instant reaction, President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Annisul Huq told reporters that there is a guideline in the BNP manifesto on economic improvement.

Earth enjoys full moon close-up

A full moon has occurred closer to the Earth than it has done at any time for the past 15 years.
The Moon's elliptical orbit means its distance from the Earth is not constant.
It was a little over 350,000km away as it passed over the northern hemisphere, about 30,000km closer than usual. Astronomers said the moon would appear brighter and larger than usual, but the sky in the UK was almost completely covered by cloud.
Friday's full moon was predicted to appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full moons this year, according to Nasa.
