Emergency must go: HRC chief Bdnews24.com, Dhaka Justice Amirul Kabir Chowdhury, chairman of the recently formed National Human Rights Commission, says the sooner the state of emergency is lifted the better. "Under a state of emergency human rights are violated," he stated, speaking to journalists after a dialogue arranged by The South Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights Studies (SAILS) and the French Embassy in Dhaka. Regarding the tasks of the newly formed commission, he said that it would work independently and "never under any influence". He also mentioned that for the commission to succeed, cooperation from all quarters was needed. Presided over by Dr Shamsul Bari, chairperson of SAILS, the meeting was also addressed by French ambassador to Bangladesh Charley Causeret, Dr Kamal Hossain, Dr Imtiaz Ahmed of Dhaka University's department of International Relations, human rights lawyer Dr Shirin Sharmin and others.
