Execution of fishermen-friendly policy urged

Participants of a day long workshop on 'review of fishery related policy, law, act and ordinance' emphasized on execution of marginal level fishermen-friendly policy and prevention against climate change and environment pollution affecting open water fishing resources and ensuring sovereignty over the international maritime boundary line.
They suggested organizing marginal level fishermen with professional identity cards, supplying interest free or low interest rated fishery loan for marginal fishermen like marginal farmers of agriculture sector. Regular survey and extending assistance to improve their conditions and solve the problems of the marginal fishermen by relating local government representatives to develop and preserve open water fishing resources of the country also called.
Community Development Centre (CODEC) arranged the program with assistances from district fishery department and NGO Manusher Jonno Foundation at the conference room of the deputy commissioner of Barisal on Sunday at Saint Bangladesh Auditorium of the city .
Compiled research results and suggestions collected from 29 including 9 coastal upazilas presented through audio-visual affects in the program. The program was presided over by Kamol Sen Gupta, deputy executive director of CODEC with Santosh Ranjan Talukdar, additional divisional commissioner of Barisal, as chief guest.
Abdullah Al Mamun Khan, senior operating officer of monitoring and research department of CODEC, conducted the program addressed by Md. Abdul Aziz, deputy director, Bankim Chandra Biswas, assistant director of fishery, district fishery officer, Md. Israil Pundit, member of upazila alliance body of CODEC, chairman of Chandramohan union parishad of Barisal and central president of Khudra Matsayajibi Samity.
About 40 participants including grass root level fishermen, fish merchants, journalists, lawyers, fishery and youth development officials, elites attended the program. In the discussion it was revealed that climate change by global warming, green house affects, and environmental pollutions influencing decreasing of fishing wealth in open water sources.
Change of river flows and currents, emerging shoals and increasing erosion, constructing dams, embankment, polluting water resources by dumping industrial wastages, chemicals, water transport fuels on water, using chemical fertilizers and pesticides on lands also severely affecting fishing resources. The participants also emphasized on ensuring safety and security for Bangladeshi fishermen in coast and deep sea fishing sectors across the international marine boundary to stop looting of fishing wealth, pollution and illegal encroachment by foreign fishing boats, trawlers, ships. Execution of government policy with the theme of 'Machher Bangsha Rakkha Peley, Khaddayo Ortho Dui Meley' (If fish resources are protected, food and money are guaranteed) needs incitement of local government representatives with the program, they said.
The facilities approved by the policy, law, act and ordinances are mostly fishermen friendly, but mainly using not by the grass root level fishermen engage fishing on rivers, haors, estuary, coast and sea., but by closed water fish farmers, psciculture cultivators, fish merchant Mahajans, middlemen Faria and Dalals. The real grass root level fishermen engaged in vast open water fishing day and night under sun and rain and storm for their livelihood are ignorant, deprived and without capacities to achieve those facilities, leader of the fishermen association claimed.
JS Poll: Gopalganj: 5 nomination papers submitted

5 (Five) candidates of the 9th Jatiya Sangsad elections were submitted their nomination papers to the returning officer (Deputy Commissioner) Gopalganj at his official till writing this report on Monday.
The candidates were Awami League Chief and former Prime Minister Shaikh Hasina Gopalganj-3, of Awami League, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim Gopalgnaj-3 of Awami League, Kazi Shahin of Gopalganj-1 of Jatiya Party (Ershad), Advocate Nahaj Pasha Gopalganj-2, Jatiya Party (Ershad) and Gour Chandra Biswas Gopalganj-3 of Jatiya Party (Ershad).
Awami League Presidium Member and former health minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim submitted his nomination paper and Awami League Chief Sheikh Hasina's Nomination paper was submitted to SM Ashfaque Hussain, returning officer (DC) Gopalganj at its office on Nov. 23.

Social revolution to prevent corruption underscored

Our expectation to the political leaders is that they should not be involved in corruption and they should not allow anyone to get involved in it.
No sector of the country is free from corruption. So a social revolution is a must to prevent it. If the political leaders don't want to prevent it, it is impossible to eradicate corruption from the society. It is high time to compel the future leaders to clear their position in the upcoming fight against corruption. Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury, Chairman of Anti-Corruption Commission, said all these while he was addressing a view exchanging meeting with govt. officials and the representatives of civil society at Lohagara Upazila auditorium in Narail district on Wednesday morning.
Here in this meeting, Awami League nominated MP candidate Brigadier Abu Baker (retd) committed as saying that he would never get involved in corruption and back the evildoers if he was voted to power.
The meeting was addressed, among others, by ex vice-principal Gazi Azizur Rahman, poura mayor Newaz Ahmed Thakur, Sheikh Hafizur Rahman, OC of Lohagara thana Abdul Hye Sarker, it was presided over by TNO Mohammad Rezaul Karim.
HIV/AIDS preventive programme held in Mymensingh

HIV/AIDS preventive programme and youth booklet distribution programme through religious Institutions and religious leaders was held at Trishal field office, Islamic Foundation on 19th November. Upazila Health and family planning Officer Dr Sayed Md. Habibullah was present as chief guest. Poet Farid Ahmed Dulal, Field Superviser Shahjahan Siraj, RRC representative Tuhin were present as special guests while it was presided over by DD (Incharge) Islamic Foundation Md Abdul Wadud. It was organised by Islamic Foundation, Mymensingh and RRC Tangail assisted by National STD/AIDS programme (NASP), DGHS and Save the Children.
The speakers said only Imam could prevent AIDS by delivering their speeches through khotba and other religious activities. Islam is the code of complete life. Religious faith and abstains from drug, smoking, free sex only can prevent AIDS, 70 imam were present on the occasion.
Rupganj AL holds election preparatory meet

The leaders and activists of the Rupganj Upazila Awami League held a meeting at Kamargope Govt Primary School field on the 25th November with Oali Ullah, Awami League president of the No-03 ward of Tarabo Pourashava in the chair.
Gazi Golam Dastagir, Bir Pratic nominated candidate of Awami League, for the JS poll of the upazila addressed the meeting as the chief guest. Among others, Dr Shawkat Ali, upazila Awami League Vice-Chairman, Hazi Mustafizur Rahman Mollah, Mohammad Ali Awal Mollah, Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan, Azhar Uddin, Abdul Karim and Kamal Hossain Awami League leaders addressed the meeting.
Gazi Golam Dastagir said in his address that he would do every thing for the distressed and unemployed youths. He added that he would set up a vocational institution to make the unemployed into human resource if people elect him. He sought blessing from all and urged the leaders to work together forgetting previous enmity.

2 female garment workers killed in Ctg road mishap
CHITTAGONG, Nov 26: Two female garment workers were killed and three others injured in a tragic road accident at Gosaildanga crossing near Chittagong port Wednesday. Local people said a port bound truck hit the two rickshaws carrying four garment workers on way to their workplace, killing Rekha Alam, 22, and Nilufar Akhter, 28, on the spot at about 8am. No other details about the deceased were available immediately. Two other garments workers traveling on same rickshaws and a rickshaw puller were injured in the accident. They were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, reports UNB.
Mattress factory catches fire in Noakhali
NOAKHALI, Nov 26: Valuables of a mattress factory were gutted in a fire at Anantapur in Begumganj upazila Monday. Local fire fighters said the fire originated from an electric short circuit when the works at Upasham Mattress Factory were going on at noon. Mattress making four machines and raw materials were gutted in the fire. On information, two fire fighting units from Maijdee rushed to the spot and doused the flame with the help of local people, reports UNB.
Cop killed in Comilla road mishap
COMILLA, Nov 26: A police constable was killed in a road accident in gas field area of Devidwar upazila on early Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Anisur Rahman, 40, of Madaripur district. Police said the accident took place on Comilla-Brahmanbaria road at about 1:30am as a speeding truck ran Anisur Rahman over, leaving him critically injured. He was on highway patrol duty. He succumbed to his injuries on way to local hospital, reports UNB.
JP man killed in Sirajganj road mishap
SIRAJGANJ, Nov 26: A local young Jatiya Party leader was killed in a road accident near Hatikomrul bridge on Dhaka-Bogra highway in Rayganj upazila on Monday. The deceased was identified as Ruhul Amin Isha, 24, son of Abdus Samad of Raghurgati village in Sadar upazila. Police said, Isha died on the spot at noon as a speeding bus rammed into his motorbike. Isha was on his way to take part in a rally organized to welcome JP Chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad on his return to Dhaka from Rangpur through the district. Police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed, reports UNB.
2 bandits held with looted goods in Comilla
Comilla, Nov 26: Police arrested two dacoits when they were fleeing with the booty after committing robbery at a bus on Dhaka-Chittagong highway near Cheora area in Sadar South upazila early Tuesday. The arrested were identified as Anwar Hossain, of Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj and Delwar Hossain of Comilla district. Police said a gang of robbers in the guise of passengers, boarded the capital bound bus from Chittagong. When the bus reached in front of the Cheora Vita-world hotel in Chowddagram upazila at about 3:00 am the bandits started plundering the valuables of the passengers, reports UNB.
