Fire at DSE building

A fire was broke out at Mona Securities Limited of Dhaka Stock Exchange Limited (DSE) on the third floor of (DSE) main building of the country's prime bourse at about 8.00am yesterday.

Fire brigade reached the spot just after the fire, originating from short circuit broke out, and brought it under control.

The office of the Mona Securities was partially damaged by the faire, however other broker houses and the DSE office remained unaffected.

Trading at DSE started normally at 10.00am.

Broker house of DSE catches fire

A broker house of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) in city's Motijheel area caught fire Tuesday morning.

According to a DSE press release, the fire originated in Mona Financial Consultant Securities Ltd, located at the main building of the country's prime bourse, from electric short circuit at about 8am.

The release also said that only the member house has been affected partially as fire fighters rushed in just after the eruption of the fire and brought it under control.

There is no harm or damage from the incident at any other broker house or at DSE office.

Three with Yaba, arms in city

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in separate drives, arrested two terrorists along with Yaba tablets, some heroine and arms and ammunition from the city's Agargaon and Mohammadpur area on Monday-Tuesday.

In a drive, on suspicion RAB-2 men challenged three/four youths near Agargaon Cooperative Office at about 12.15am on Tuesday.

At one stage, they opened fire on RAB men when they chased them. The elite force retaliated it, leaving drug peddler Delwar Hossain alias Nayan wounded. His associates, however, managed to flee.

On his confessional statement, the elite force recovered one revolver, its one bullet and 92 small packets of heroine from the area, said a RAB press release.

In another drive, RAB arrested drug peddler Rafiqul Islam along with 100 Yaba tablets from Zakir Hossain Road in Mohamadpur area at 6:45pm on Monday.

US Trade Show to begin on Feb 26

The 18th annual US Trade Show will begin here at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel on February 26 next year.

12 poachers held with deer

UNB, Bagerhat



Forest officials, in separate drives, arrested 12 deer poachers from Sundarbans area yesterday.

Sundarbans East Zone officials also seized a deer, a slaughtered deer, six deer heads and 100 kgs of venison and 600 traps during the drives.

The arrested were identified as Motaleb Biswas, 45, Alam Biswas, 50, Shahajan Khan, 48, Sohrab Hawldar, 50, Kala Biswas, 22, Badal Chandra Mistri, 24, Elias Hawladar, 22, Mohsin Hawlader, 22, Firoz Howladar, 23, Al-Amin Forazi, 24, Ramananda Haldar, 55, and Masudur Rahman, 42.

Sundarbans East Zone DFO SM Shahidullah said, acting on a tip-off, forest officials conducted a drive at Kachikhali in Sharankhola upazila and arrested 10 deer poachers along with a slaughtered deer, three deer heads, 20 kgs of venison and 600 traps.

Another team of forest officials arrested two poachers from Pashur river in Mongla upazila and recovered a deer, three deer heads and 80 kgs of venison from their boat.

500-seat dorm to be constructed for students of SUST

A 500-seat dormitory for the female students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology(SUST)will be constructed involving around Tk 10crore.

Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury laid the foundation stone of the dormitory on Monday.

Divisional Commissioner Dr Jafar Ahmed Khan and Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof. Dr M Aminul Islam, among others, were present.

VC Dr Aminul Islam said the work will start very soon.

LDP may get 20 seats from AL

The Awami League-led electoral alliance may allocate up to 20 seats to Liberal Democratic Party for the upcoming general election, a senior LDP leader told reporters on Monday.

"We will submit a list of seats on Tuesday to the alliance," said Jahanara Begum, secretary general of LDP, after a meeting with AL president Sheikh Hasina in the evening.

"We firstly wanted 30 electoral constituencies. But they have asked us for names of 20 seats."

A delegation of LDP leaders Jahanara Begum and Rezwan Ahmed joined the meeting with Hasina, AL's acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam and presidium member Motia Chowdhury.

Copyright violation case filed over mobile ring tones

A case was filed yesterday at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka on charges of copyright infringement in the use of songs of popular artists as mobile phone ring and welcome tones.

Metropolitan magistrate Abdul Majid took statements of singers and composers Andrew Kishore, Ayyub Bachchu, Md Rafiquzzaman, Alam Khan, Sheikh Sadi Khan, Kabir Bakul and Shuvra Dev and fixed Wednesday to decide whether to accept the case.

The case has accused E.B Solutions Ltd's managing director Rafiqur Rahman Khan and directors Md Foysal Ahmed, Enamul Huq, Md Khaled Hossain and Rafiqul Alam Kabiraj.

"A decision on whether this case will be considered will be given on Wednesday," said Qamruzzaman Mahboob, lawyer for the plaintiff.

The plaintiff and the witnesses said that E.B Solutions, based in Dhanmondi Road 5, had been supplying their songs to various mobile companies as ring and welcome tunes.

"I am the son of Motiur Rahman, editor of Prothom Alo and my organisation had been supplying facilities like ring tones, welcome tones, sms and mms services to the mobile companies," said the plaintiff, Mahmudur Rahman, in the plea.

He added that only he had a copyright agreement with the singers and composers.

The accused had been offering ring tones and welcome tones to subscribers through advertisements in different papers and magazines, he said.

He appealed to the court to order arrest of the accused and confiscation of all the equipment used to send the tones.
