BSS, Khulna

Discussants at a workshop in the city on Tuesday urged banks, financial institutions and other private sector players to come forward and help develop major infrastructures in the county.

The event titled 'infrastructure building under private sector' organised by Board of Investment (BOI) focused on creating awareness among businessmen of taking part in developing major infrastructures.

BOI executive chairman Kamaluddin Ahmed pre-sided the workshop while Vice-President of Khulna Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Forhad Ahmed Akhand was the special guest.

BOI director Mamdud Hossain Alamgir, executive director and CEO of Infrastructure Investment Facilitation Center (IIFC) Nazrul Islam, entrepreneurs, and senior officials of banks, financial institutions, Mongla Port, Western Zone Power Distribution Company, REB, Khulna Unnayan Katripakkha, BSTI, EPB and such other organisations took part in the workshop.

The BOI executive chairman said the government is interested in promoting infrastructure projects with private sector participation and continuing to encourage it. He said the BOI has so far received 22 infrastructure project proposals. If the projects can be implemented, he said, there would be revolutionary change in the country's infrastructure development.

The workshop especially discussed the possibility of private sector investment in developing Mongla Port infrastructures to remove impediments to its proper running. It tried to identify the real problems and ways to find solution.

The discussants also suggested developing tourism infrastructures for the Sundarbans to make it an attractive destination for people from home and abroad.
