SSC result under BOU published



UNB, Dhaka



The final results of SSC first and second year examination-2007 under Bangladesh Open University were published yesterday A total of 1,38,940 learners were enrolled in the SSC programme. Of them, 59,604 appeared in second year while 77,886 in first year examination.

Of the examinees, 25,736 came out successful in different grade points. The average pass percentage is 43.18, said a release.

Of the successful candidates, 201 got GPA-4, 1,856 GPA-3.5, 7,330 GPA-3, 15,536 GPA-2 and 813 got GPA-1. Successful male candidates were 14,313 while female 11,423.

Examinees have been asked to contact their respective tutorial centres to know their results.

All parties should take part in polls for greater interest of nation: Hamid

Awami League leader Advocate Abdul Hamid yesterday said all political parties should take part in the upcoming election for the sake of greater interest of the nation and to safeguard democracy.

"If any party wants to boycott the polls would bear the responsibility of strangulating democracy," he said in an obvious reference to BNP that still undecided about participation in December 18 election.

Talking to newsmen after filing nomination to contest the polls from Kishoreganj-4 Advocate Hamid said his party expects election will be free, fair and neutral with participation of all parties. "We do not want to net the ball in an empty field."

Hamid, a former speaker, viewed that a bright future is awaiting the nation. He said all political parties should take part in the polls for safeguarding democracy and for greater interest of the nation.

AL acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam also filed the nomination for Kishoreganj-1 constituency.

Govt employees' property statement: ACC in dilemma how to resolve them

Nearly nine months have elapsed since some 1.2 million government employees and officials have submitted their wealth statements, but the Anti-Corruption Commission is yet to know from the government as to how this matter would be resolved.

The last date for submitting wealth statements by the government employees and officials expired on February 29, this year.

ACC director general Col Hanif Iqbal told at the regular briefing Thursday afternoon that the Commission sought recommendations from the government as to how to resolve the issue. Based on that, the Cabinet Division asked advice from all the ministries concerned.

The anti-graft watchdog is yet to be informed by the Cabinet Division about the feedbacks from the ministries.

Hanif said the ACC has so far sent 229 names to the Truth and Accountability Commission (Tac) for considering their clemency applications and another 40 applications were to be sent today (Thursday), the last day for filing clemency applications.

Another 25 applications were under process, he said, adding that the list of these individuals was to be sent yesterday and the relevant documents would be sent later.

The ACC spokesperson said the Commission has approved issuance of notices to 20 individuals directing them to submit their wealth statements. They include politicians, government officials and an employee of the ACC.

Those who are going to receive the notices are Kishoreganj Pourasava Chairman Abu Taher, Pirojpur Pourasava Chairman Habibur Rahman Malek, former Bangladesh Railway additional director general Khurshid Anwar and his wife Samsun Naher, PIO of Rajbari's Pangsha upazila Keramat Ali Biswas and his wife Zannat ul Ferdous, Tajul Islam Mintu of Barisal, his wife Wahida Begum and their son Ershadul Islam Zia, ex-state minister Shajahan Omar's associate Rafiqul Islam Jamal and his wife Farjana Jahan Bithi, ACC data entry operator Shahjahan Ali, Land Ministry employees Faruk Hossain, Nasir Uddin and Mahbubur Rahman, Lokman Mahmud of Segunbagicha, Abdul Malek Matbor of Savar, businessman from Bogra Azizur Rahman Milton and Ainaz Rahman of Rajshahi.

MN Larma's death anniversary observed

Speakers at a discussion said yesterday that time had come to recognise and establish the identity of the indigenous people in the constitution of the country.

They urged to restore the fundamental four principles of the 1972 constitution to eliminate all types of discrimination from the country.

The discussion held at the National Liberation Museum marked the 25th death anniversary of Manobendra Narayan Larma organised by the Bangladesh Adibashi Odhiker Andolon. Pankaj Bhatyacharya, Presidium member of the Ganoforum, Presided over the programme.

Terming Larma as a pragmatic and progressive leader, Saiyad Abul Moksud, columnist and researcher, said his death was a big loss for both the indigenous and the deprived-poor Bangali people of the country.

President of Bangladesh Workers Party, Rashed Khan Menon said our mentality should be upgraded for the implementation of Parbatya Shanti Chukti of 1997.

The speakers said, he raised his voice to protect and establish the human rights not only of the people of hill-districts but also for the people of the plain lands. He dreamed of a secular state, they added.

It may be mentioned, Larma was killed on November 10, 1983 by some dissidants of his party.

Ruhin Hossen Prince, member of the central committee of Bangladesh Communist Party, Prof. HKS Arefin of Dhaka University, among others, spoke at the commemorating meeting.

Prevention of liver disease stressed

Speakers at a symposium yesterday emphasized on the prevention of liver diseases as the most effective strategy.

Association of the Study of the Liver organised the 8th international symposium on "Liver Disease-2008" at Hotel Sonargaon in the city with Prof Mobin Khan, president of the association, in the chair while national Prof Nurul Islam attended as the chief guest and Prof Dr Nazrul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU, as special guest.

Liver disease is one of the acute health problems in our country and most of the liver diseases could be prevented through personal cleanliness and healthy sanitation, the speakers said in the meeting.

They expressed the hope that Bangladesh would be able to acquire the capability of replacing liver, like other developed countries, within a short time.

Around 1,000 liver experts including 10 foreign experts attended the function.
