Pak envoy meets Hasina

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina yesterday reiterated that her party is ready to take part in the December 18 parliamentary elections and its nomination process is at the final stage.

Hasina made the remarks during a meeting with Pakistan High Commissioner Alamgir Babar at her Sudha Sadan residence at 11am.

Briefing reporters, Al acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said they discussed the upcoming parliamentary polls and both agreed that the present crisis could only be resolved through the elections.

He said Awami League will soon sit with parties of the grand alliance for sharing seats and finalize candidatures for 300 constituencies.

Ashraful said Awami League believes that the election will be held on December 18 and all parties will participate in it.

Asked about Hasina-Khaleda talks, he said, "We're now busy with elections. Our nominations are almost at the final stage. We'll see whenever the question will arise in the future."

Sought his comments about the December 18 polls, the Pakistan High Commissioner said it is a matter of the government, Election Commission and political parties to decide. "Pakistan will respect the verdict of the Bangladeshi people," he said, adding that since the schedule is in place, the elections will be held on schedule.
