At least seven shops were gutted in a fierce fire at Boiragi Bazaar in Subarna Char upazila here early Tuesday.

Witnesses said the fire originated at a teashop from an electric short circuit at about 3am and soon engulfed the adjoining six other shops, burning huge valuables.

The firefighters from the district headquarters rushed in and put out the blaze after frantic efforts with the help of local people.

The affected shop owners claimed that cash and valuables worth about Tk 12 lakh were gutted in the fire.
