JS Election-’08 : Narail: Grassroot level AL nomination aspirants cry for vote from door to door

A letter received here by district Awami League has changed the total scenrario of the political situation of the district. The Awami League activists became more lively than ever before.

The content of the letter signed by Syed Ashraful Islam, Secretary in charge of Cenral Awami League is that the candidate for the coming national election should be chosen from grassroot level. The president and secretary of union and ward committees are the supreme authority to elect a panel of candidates consisting of five names. These who are aspirant to seek nomination from Awami League High Command have to buy a nomination paper spending Tk. 7500/-. Showing the receipt he or she may declare his candidature to the voters of grassroot level.

Having this informaiton, Awami League nomination seekers began to contact to the activists of grassroot level. Local leaders who are neglected for a long time are happy to be evaluated by the leaders.

Professor Gour Chandra Gain, president of Mulia Union AL said, it is our long cherished desire to be evaulated by the organisaiton. This system will help the democracy to be institutionalised. Guest birds who win the party tickets spending a hefty amount of money will be discouraged, he added.

Call to raise mass awareness against human trafficking

Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) here has taken a massive programme to resist smuggling, border crossing, and trafficking drug, women and children.

The programme includes holding meeting to create awareness among bordering villagers, increasing number of BDR jawans of the border outposts (BOP) and also tightened its patrol along the Satkhira border areas.

As part of the programme, a discussion meeting on "Resisting Smuggling and Trafficking Drug, Women and Children" organised by Satkhira BDR 41 Battalion was held at Debhata Upazila Parishad auditorium on Thursday afternoon. Commanding Officer of 41 Battalion Lt. Colonel AKM Shamsuddin Shams was present as chief guest with Debhata Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdur Rashid in the chair.

It was addressed, among others, by BDR operation officer Major Shamim, OC of Debhata thana Lokman Hekim, UP chairman Rezaul Karim, journalist Abu Taleb Mollah, UP member Mizanur Rahman, and Ali Hossain.

The speakers said a large number of women and children are being trafficked to India by some organised gangs of human traffickers every year. The increasing trend of smuggling and human trafficking has created a grave concern among the peace- loving people of the bordering areas here. They urged the authorities concerned to take steps to combat the menace effectively.

Col. Shamsuddin Shams said the smugglers are not friends of anyone but the enemies of the country and the people.

A section of people of border areas is involved in smuggling and human trafficking, and has pushed our young generation to a great danger, he said.

"These criminals are destroying our agricultural land by bringing a huge quantity of Indian adulterated fertilisers", Col. Shams added.

Boat race ends in Baraigram, prizes distributed

Three-day-long boat race was ended at Gormati Ghat under Baraigram upazila in Kholisha Dhanga river on November 5.

On the last day, social worker Dr. Abdul Quder as chief guest, distributed prizes among the participant boat owners and winner boat owners. 20 boats took part in this boat race competition. Boats of Md Belayet Hossain, Md Afser Ali and Abul Kalam stood first, second and third respectively.

Founding anniversary of Jubodal observed in Madaripur

30th founding anniversary of Jatiyotabadi Jubodal was observed here on the premises of local Rajjak Howlader Academy on 27th October with Mizanur Rahman Murad, the president of district committee of the organisation in the chair.

Sarwar Hossain, General Secretary of the organisation, Faruk Bepary, Vice President of the same, Rafique Islam, Bimal Kumar Debnath, Dulal Howlader Emaraf Hossain, Kamal Howlader, Mahbubur Rahman and Moniruzzaman spoke on the occasion.

Newsman dead

A newsman of the "Daily Dandy Barta" named Kamruzzaman Kamrul, 50, died of cardiac arrest on the 9th November at the Holy Family Hospital Dhaka. His namaz-e-janaja was held on the 10th November at 10 AM Later he was buried at his village Mortazabad of Rupganj in Narayanganj.

He left behind his wife, three sons, one daughter and a host of well-wishers to mourn his death.

Mass awareness on adverse impact of tobacco emphasised

Speakers at a meeting on Tobacco Control here have called for stopping tobacco production alongside creating a mass awareness about the adverse impact of smoking on public health.

They also urged the administration to take appropriate measures to enforce the anti-tobacco law, especially for stopping smoking in open spaces.

The speakers expressed concern over a gradual rise in the production and use of tobacco in the three hill districts of Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban. Addressing as chief guest the function titled 'Advocacy Meeting on Tobacco Control', Md. Nurul Amin, Deputy Commissioner of the district, stressed the need for a concerted effort from all walks of life to campaign against tobacco.

Dr. Md. Abdullah, Civil Surgeon, Biswajit Bhattacharjya, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Tarun Kanti Gosh, executive officer of Rangamati Hill District Council and SM Selim Reja, Additional District Magistrate, among others, addressed the meeting as special guests with Kazi Nazrul Islam, district president of CAB, in the chair. Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB), Rangamati district unit, in association with World Health Organisation (WHO) organised the meeting yesterday in the conference room of District Administration. Public representatives, businessmen, journalists, government and non-government officials joined the function.

Body recovered

Police recovered dead body of a boy from a ditch near the PRSP School at Alekanda area of the city on Monday morning.

The boy was identified as Imran, 16, son of Mobarak Ali Howladar of Uttar Mogarpara in Kashipur area of the city outskirt.

Police being informed by the local people recovered the dead body and sent to Barisal SBMCH morgue for postmortem.

Solaiman Howladar, brother of the victim, said Imran became missing since Sunday morning after going to Mohanganj Bazaar of Lakutia area about two kilometers away from their home to sell fish.

Hayatul Islam, assistant commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police, said that from primary investigation it was found that bleeding was out from ear and mouth of the boy and perhaps he was strangled to death.

2 killed in Habiganj road mishap

HABIGANJ, Nov 11: Two people were killed and another was injured when a train rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Nasratpur level-crossing in Sadar upazila Tuesday. Police said Akhaura-bound 'Kushiyara' local train from Sylhet hit the auto-rickshaw while it was crossing the level-crossing at about 12.45 pm, leaving two people, including its driver, dead on the spot and injuring another. One of the deceased was identified as Jasim Khan, 48, hailed from Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria district while identity of the driver could not be known immediately, reports UNB.

One killed in Laxmipur road accident

LAXMIPUR, Nov 11: An adolescent boy was killed and five other people were injured as an auto rickshaw overturned at Betua in Ramganj upazila on Ramganj-Haziganj road in the district on Monday. The deceased was identified as Shafiq, 11, of Hazimara of Raypur upazila. Witnesses said when a pick up van hit a Raypur bound auto rickshaw from Haziganj it skid off the road, leaving six auto rickshaw passengers injured. Among the injured, Shafiq died on the way to hospital. The other injured were given first aid, reports UNB.

Madrasah principal hacked to death in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Nov 11: A madrasah principal was hacked to death at village Gharila under Daulatpur thana Sunday midnight. The deceased was identified as Maulana Nurul Islam, 40, founder principal of Umme Kulsum Dakhil Madrasah. Police recovered the body on Monday and sent it to Manikganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB.
