Pepsi-DRU Inter-House Cricket Tournament :Auspicious start for New Nation

The New Nation made an auspicious start in the Pepsi-DRU Inter-House Cricket Tournament when they got walkover from Janakantha in their first Group B match at the Moulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

Tomorrow The New Nation will take on Banglabazar Patrika at 11.00 AM at the same venue.

In the day's other match, Inqilab (77/o) defeated Jai Jai Din (73/4) by five wickets at the same venue. Iqbal Hossain Chapal of Inqilab was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Banglabazar Patrika (66/0) crushed Khabarpatra (29/3) by 37 runs. Mojibor Rahman of Banglabazar was awarded the prize of the Man of the Match for his performance.

Channel i (85/2) thrashed BSS (18/5) by 67 runs. Partha Tanvir Noved of Channel i was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Korotowa (68/0) outplayed Financial Express (67/4) by five wickets. Arif Rahman of Korotowa earned the prize of the Man of the Match.

Bangla Vision (100/0) eliminated Manabzamin (14/5) by 86 runs. Mostafijur Rahman of Bangla Vision achieved the prize of the Man of the Match.

Jugantor (74/3) overpowered Desh Bangla (50/1) by 24 runs. Hossain Jakir of Jugantor was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Earlier, Executive Director and Chief Executive of the Transcom Beverages Limited Golam Quddus Chowdhury inaugurated the Tournament as the chief guest while General Secretary of Bangladesh Handball Federation Asaduzzaman Kohinoor, Chairman of the Medical Committee of BOA Dr Omar Faruque, former member of the executive committee of BCB Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury were along with him as special guests.

Acting General Secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) Nazrul Kabir, Editor of The New Nation Mostafa Kamal Majumder, Sports Secretary of DRU AKM Kamruzzaman Hiru, former sports secretaries of DRU Monwar Haque, Rafiqul Islam, Badrul Alam Khokon, Morsalin Ahmed were present at the time.

Div I Hockey: Police defeat Mukto Bihanga

Bangladesh Police AC outplayed Mukto Bihanga Tarun Sangha by two goals to nil in the Green Delta Insurance First Division Hockey League at the Moulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

All the two goals were scored in the first half.

Khairul, Rana of Police Ac scored one goal each.

In the day's other match between Farashganj SC and Uttara Hockey Club ended in a goalless draw at the same venue.

Div II Football: Ismail powers East End Club to earn formidable victory

Ismail's hat-trick powered East End Club to earn a formidable 6-0 victory over Prantik KC in the day's second match of the Second Division Football League at the Kamalapur Bir Sreshtha Shaheed Sepoy Mohammad Mostafa Stadium on Saturday.

Gafur, Mahin, Biplob of East End Club scored one goal each.

In the day's other match, T&T Club of Motijheel came from behind and earned ahard-fought 2-1 win over Dhanmondi Club at the same venue.

The first half was locked 1-1.

Riaz of Dhanmondi Club gave his team early lead in the 4th minute.

Jewel of T&T Club equalised the margin in the 23rd minute.

Jalil of T&T Club scored the match- winning goal in the 67th minute.

Today Police AC will face Bangladesh Boys Club while Bassabo Tarun Sangha will meet Little Friends Club at the same venue.

Razib secures 5 points in Bavarian Chess

UNB, Dhaka

Grandmaster Enamul Hossain Razib secured 5 points after the 6th round matches of the 12th Bavarian Open International Chess Championship at Bad Wiessee in Germany on Thursday.

Razib drew with GM Babras Piotr of Poland to share the 2nd slot along with 14 other players.

GM Edouard Romain of France and GM Alexander Naumann of Germany are now jointly enjoying lead with 5.5 points after the 6th round.

Bangladesh football team leaves for Myanmar

An 18-member Bangladesh national football team leaves here for Myanmar Saturday midnight by Singapore Airlines to take part in the 3rd Grand Royal Challenge Cup to be held November 11-21 in Yangon with the hope to maintaining consistent performance.

Veteran medio Motiur Rahman Munna will lead the Bangladesh team in the six-nation meet, with defender Mohammad Sujan as his deputy.

Bangladesh, which won their first ever international soccer trophy in Myanmar in 1995, looks for a win in their favorite ground to come out of their win drought in the last 17 international matches.

However, in their two meetings, Bangladesh lost to Myanmar on both occasions - the first by 1-2 goals in the last Grand Royal Challenge Cup final in 2005 and the second by 0-1 goal in the last month's Merdeka Cup Football in Malaysia

In the upcoming tournament in Myanmar, Bangladesh has been placed in group A with strong Indonesia and hosts Myanmar, while group B comprises Vietnam, Malaysia and Hyundai FC (South Korea).

Bangladesh will play hosts Myanmar in the inaugural match of the six-team 3rd Grand Royal Challenge Cup on Nov 11 and their 2nd and last group match against Indonesia on Nov 13.

Two top teams from each of the two groups will play the semi-final on Nov 18 and 19, while the final match is slated for Nov 21.

Talking to the reporters, national football coach Shafiqul Islam Manik expressed his optimism that the team would continue to perform consistently during the Myanmar tour.

He said: "The morale of our players is high compared to the previous occasions… we want to maintain consistency of our performance in the recently concluded Merdeka Cup Football."

The national team coach admitted that their group rivals -- Myanmar and Indonesia -- are comparatively better sides, but said "we will play positive football against them."

Muktijoddha SKC taste first win beating Rahmatganj MFS 1-0

Muktijoddha Sangsad KC tasted the first victory in their 7th match of the Citycell 2nd B. League beating giant-killer Rahmatganj MFS by 1-0 goal in the day's lone match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here Saturday. Walid Khan scored the match-winning goal for the all-red freedom fighters team in the 4th minute. Muktijoddha earned the first point after making 1-1 draw with Brother Union Club in the last match following their fifth defeat in a row.

With the day's feat, Muktijoddha SKC have secured four points from seven outings while Rahmatgang MFA remained at 10 points, also playing seven matches.

Chittagong Abahani will play Khulna Abahani at Khulna Stadium today (Sunday).

Indira Road CA emerges group champion to reach final round

UNB, Dhaka

Indira Road Cricket Academy emerged group champions to reach the final round of the Metropolis Third Division qualifying Cricket League beating Udiyaman Cricket Academy by 24 runs at Dhanmondui Cricket Stadium Saturday.

Batting first, Indira Road CA scored 209 for 8 in 45 overs with Kabir contributing 70 runs. In reply, Udiyaman Academy were all out for 185 in 42.5 overs.

In the day's other match, Battalion Cricket Academy (221/2) beat Taltola Sporting Club (216/8) by eight wickets at the Dhaka University ground.

Earlier, 15 teams -- Mohammapur Sonali Sangha, Tasin Hasin Cricket Academy, Little Friends CA, Mohammadpur CA, Heritage Cricketers, Pallabi Imperial, Swadhinata Cricket Club, Winning Run, Mirpur Dream Boys, Dhaka CA (Sun), BKSP Greem, Rear Cricket Club, Lutfar Rahman Krira Sangsad, Corona CA and Turag Thana Cricket Eleven -- clinched the group title to reach the final round of the league.
