Grocery help strangulated

A grocery shop employee was strangulated to death at South Mugda in the city yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Ershad Ali, 22, son of Rezaul Karim of Shahajadpur upazila in Sirajganj district.

According to police, Ershad went to sleep with another employee, appointed recently, in the storeroom of the shop on Thursday night and was found dead the next morning.

Police recovered the body of Ershad from Laxmipur General Store at about 10:00am yesterday and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Motive behind the killing could not be known immediately.

Police suspected involvement of the other employee in the killing, as he remained missing since the day of occurrence.

Shop-owner Solaiman told the police that Ershad, had been working in the shop for last 4 years, brought a young man, aged about 23, on Thursday as he (Solaiman) asked him to take another helping hand for the shop. But, he neither could provide his name nor any other detail.

A case was filed with the Sabujbagh Police Station.

Teachers under MPO can contest JS elections

The school teachers included in the MPO system can contest the parliamentary elections retaining their posts, but they must resign if they want to contest the upazila polls, the Election Commission secretary said on Friday.

M Humayun Kabir made the remark to the reporters in reply to a question after attending a training workshop on electoral laws and rules held at the EC conference room.

Divisional Commissioners of Dhaka and Chittagomg, Additional Deputy Commissioners (revenue and general) of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Barisal, Khulna, Chittagong and Sylhet, Zonal Executive Officers of Dhaka City Corporation and Cantonment Executive Officers (CEO) of Dhaka and Chittagong took part in the workshop.

Kabir said all matters relating to the upcoming parliamentary and upazila elections were discussed in the workshop.

About the loan and bill defaulters, he said they would be eligible to contest the election only if they (defaulters) have the clearance showing payment of loans and bills for the last three months from the date of filing nomination papers.

Speaker, Dy Speaker pay homage to Zia



UNB, Dhaka



Speaker Barrister M Jamiruddin Sircar and Deputy Speaker Akther Hamid Siddiqui paid homage to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of National Revolution and Solidarity Day On Friday.

The Speaker and the Deputy Speaker laid floral wreaths at the mazar of the late President and stood together for a minute in solemn silence as a mark of respect, said a press release.

They also offered munajat seeking salvation of the departed soul.

IDEB founding day today

Today is the 39th founding anniversary of Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB).

IDEB has chalked out different Programmes across the country to observe the "Founding Anniversary and Public Engineer Day'08."

In the capital, a rally will be brought out from IDEB Bhaban in the city at 11.00 am today.

Rasheda K Chowdhury, adviser for Woman and Child Affairs, will inaugurate the rally as chief guest.
