Mahmudur's complaint against ACC chairman referred to govt

UNB, Dhaka

The Anti-Corruption Commission has referred former Energy Adviser Mahmudur Rahman's complaint against ACC chairman to the government for disposal.

In the complaint, Mahmudur Rahman accused Lt Gen (retd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury of misappropriating Tk 22.41 crore through money laundering when Mashhud was the chairman of the Trust Bank.

"The complaint was dispatched yesterday after noon," ACC director general (admin) Col Hanif Iqbal told UNB.

About the reason for such a decision, he said: "Since the complaint is against its chairman, the Commission thought it would be prudent to send it to the government."

Hanif earlier said at the regular briefing, "After scrutiny as per rules followed by the ACC, the complaint was placed before the two Commissioners. They have decided to place the complaint before the government for disposal."

Replying to a question, he said the complaint would be sent today to the Cabinet Division.

Failing in his bid to file a case against Mashhud on October 26, Mahmudur Rahman sent the complaint by registered post to the ACC on the following day. The ACC received the complaint on October 29.

At a press briefing on October 27, the ACC chairman vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, Col Hanif told the briefing that the Commission today sent 53 names to the Truth and Accountability Commission (Tac) for considering their clemency applications. With this, the total number of applications referred to Tac rose to 196.

Another 29 applications are pending with the ACC and those would be sent to Tac soon, he said.

Hanif later told UNB that the 53 names referred today included the lone politician, who earlier applied to the ACC to send his name to Tac.
