Time-befitting education for youth stressed

Speakers at a discussion here on Saturday underscored the need for time-befitting education for the youth community in the greater interest of making the nation free from the curse of unemployment.

They said the youth force constitutes one-fourth of the total population and they must be given up-to-date education to carry forward the nation's hopes and aspirations to further progress and prosperity.

Department of Youth Development (DYD) organised the discussion at the Bangladesh Shishu Academy auditorium here in observance of the National Youth Day. Additional Divisional Commissioner Syed Ali Nasim Khaliluzzaman and Professor ANM Saleh of Psychology Department of Rajshahi University addressed the function as the chief and the special guest respectively with Additional Deputy Magistrate AKM Mijanur Rahman in the chair.

They called for transforming the youth community into a competent workforce through providing them with need-based knowledge so that they could take part in the nation-building process. This will help them attain self-sufficiency, they added.

Deputy Director of DYD Motiur Rahman in his address of welcome elaborated the activities and performance of the department relating to training on various trades. Earlier, the DYD trainees brought out a rally parading the city streets.

Cooperative day observed at Manikganj

The National Cooperative Day was observed today at Manikganj through various programmes. Speakers at a discussion, held at the auditorium of Manikganj Zila Parishad, explained the goals of the cooperative movement and the sugnificance of the day.

GM Salehuddin, the deputy commissioner spoke as the chief guest while additional police superintendent Majid Ali and additional deputy commissioner M Salahuddin Chowdhury were special guests.

The deputy commissioner hoisted the national flag before the day's celebration. while Hassan Imam Agam, Central Co-operative Bank chairman Hasan Imam Azam district co-operative officer Abdur Razzaque jointly hoisted the co-operative flag.

1600 hectares of land to be brought under chili cultivation in Gaibandha

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken up a massive plan to cultivate chili in all seven upazilas of the district during the current season.

DAE sources said a total of 1,600 hectares of land would be brought under chili cultivation this year with a target of producing 2,400 metric tonnes of chili in the areas.

Of those, 730 hectares of land would be cultivated in Fanchhari upazila, 400 hectares in Shaghata upazila, 150 hectares in Sundarganj upazila, 150 hectares in Sadar upazila, 100 hectares in Gobindaganj upazila, 50 hectares in Sadullapur upazila and 20 hectares in Palashbari upazila.

Necessary steps have been taken to ensure supply of quality seeds, fertilizer and other agriculture inputs among the growers fair prices to boost chili production here, said DAE Deputy Director ANM Mizanur Rahman Amin.

Besides, the farmers who lost their standing crops in last floods have been encouraged to cultivate winter vegetables to recover the losses, he said.

Preservation of ancestral cultural heritage must for a pride nation’

Renowned cultural personalities and speakers have stressed the need for proper preservation, flourishing and nurturing of the rich cultural heritage of our forefathers for building a developed nation with its own entity.

The Vaoyaiya songs with heart-throbbing musical tunes not only attracted our forefathers and contributed largely in developing the civilization on the Brahmaputra basin over the centuries, but still can play a vital role in reviving the past glory of our rich culture and heritage, they said.

They also said that the cultural heritage of our predecessors must be nurtured with due honour and dignity for knowing the roots of a proud nation and bringing back the lost social b values and glories in the society.

They said this at a discussion organised on the occasion of observing the 107th birth anniversary of Vaoyaiya Samrat Abbas Uddin Ahmed at Rangpur Town Hall auditorium that ended at midnights on Monday night.

Rangpur Vaoyaiya Academy (RVA) organised the discussion and a colourful cultural evening to pay due respect to the great son of the country Abbas Uddin Ahmed.

With president of RVA Advocate Rezeka Sultana Fency in the chair, the discussion was addressed by Deputy Director General (Programme) of Bangladesh Betar from Dhaka Abdur Rouf as the chief guest.

Renowned Vaoyaiya personality Mostafa Zaman Abbasi, Rangpur DC Abdul Ahad, Regional Director of Rangpur Betar Khurshid Alam Chowdhury, renowned folklore artist of Kolkata, music composer and researcher Dr Sukh Bilap Burma, chairman of Bangladesh Vaoyaiya Academy Nadira Begum, were present.

The speakers laid stress on preserving, flourishing and nurturing the rich cultural heritage of the predecessors for leading the nation forward with its own identity and said that the songs of Abbas Uddin Ahmed are integral part of the country's cultural heritage as well as source of inspirations for the people.

"It will be the proper way to pay due respect to the great artiste if his ideals and patriotic feelings are preserved, flourished and properly nurtured by our future generation that will help them knowing our rich cultural and moral heritages," they said.

The Vaoyaiya songs with heart-throbbing tunes not only attracted our forefathers and contributed largely to the county's cultural development, but those songs still can play a vital role in reviving the past glory of our rich culture, they added.

The speakers put special emphasis on saving our national and cultural heritage from the aggression of the foreign satellite cultures for maintaining our own entity as a proud nation and flourishing Vaoyaiya songs for reviving the lost social values and humanism.

Later, a jam-packed audience of all ages in the Town hall auditorium enjoyed a very charming and attractive Vaoyaiya evening in which noted artists rendered Vaoyaiya songs to end the ceremony at midnight .

Discussion on Sanitation Month held in Gopalganj

A discussion meeting was held in Gopalganj on the occasion of the National Sanitation Month 2008 organised by the Public health Engineering Department Gopalganj recently.

A rally was brought out from Gopalganj District Shilpakala Academy Premises on October 21 and paraded main roads of the Gopalganj town led by Abdul Wahed Sikder Executive Engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department Gopalganj district and Bidhan Krishna Dey, Assistant Engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department Gopalganj.

PhD Degree conferred

Ph.D degree was conferred on Nazmun Naher in Plant Pathology under the Department of Plant Pathology by the Syndicate of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh recently. Her dissertation title was "Integrated Management of post-harvest diseases of Mango" and guided by Professor Dr. Md. Ayub Ali, Professor Dr. MA Rahim and Professor Dr. Ismail Hossain of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh.

Dr. Nazmun Naher got scholarship and financial assistance from the Fruit Tree Improvement Project funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to conduct her research. The findings of the study are useful for fruit growers, fruit businessmen, the scientists, policy makers, administrators, extension personnel and donor agencies.

She is the eldest daughter of Md. Badrul Alam and Mrs Shamsun Naher of JNC Road, Alam Nagar, Rangpur. Currently Dr Nazmun Naher is working as Trainee in Intercooperation-Leaf Project in Rangpur region.

RU BCL condemns Shibir’s portrayal of AL, BCL as terrorists

The leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Rajshahi University (RU) unit on Saturday met university Proctor Enamul Haque at his office and demanded exemplary punishment to Shibir cadres for sticking posters on walls of different halls on the campus portraying Awami League (AL) and Chhatra League as a terrorist party.

Earlier, on Friday, Shibir activists stuck under the banner of 'Flash Back October 28, 2006 and AL armed cadres' massacre' by violating Emergency Power Rules and university restrictions on the campus. They displayed photos of AL-Shibir violence in Dhaka as well as those of injured Shibir activists.

RU BCL leaders led by Diyapan Sarker Dip and Mizanur Rahman Mithu also informed the proctor that Shibir activists went to general students' rooms and distributed Jamaat's weekly paper 'Sonar Bangla' displaying photos of Shibir activists who sustained injuries during October 28 violence.

BCL men alleged that Shibir tried to destroy congenial academic atmosphere on the campus by their untoward action and showdown on the campus accompanying huge number of outsiders. BCL leader alleged that Shibir told general students that AL and Chhatra League are terrorist parties because they killed general people in Dhaka on October 28, 2006.

BCL leaders called on university authorities and demanded immediate ban on such kind of documentary film show on the campus. They also demanded immediate ban on Jamaat-Shibir politics on RU campus and demanded immediate assurance of security of their leaders and activists on the campus.

They demanded exemplary punishment of the responsible Shibir cadres who stuck posters on the campus and arranged documentary film show violating Emergency Power Rules and university restriction. BCL leaders threatened to launch a tougher movement against the university authorities if the responsible Shibir cadres are not punished.

Later, they held a protest rally in front of the central library premises and called upon the government to punish the war criminals. When contacted, Proctor Dr. Enamul Haque said that after investigation of the incident 'I will take necessary steps.'

National Youth Day observed in Narsingdi

To mark the National Youth Day-2008, Department of Youth Development arranged a discussion at Jubo Training Centre at Patchdona in sadar upazila in the district on Saturday.

A total of Taka 12.47 lakh was distributed among 28 trained jobless youths. Certificates were also distributed among them.

Deputy Commissioner of Narsingdi Amrita Bario attended the function as the chief guest.

Deputy Director, Department of Youth Development Narsingdi Mostafizur Rahman presided over the function.

Principal Abdul Kader Mollah of City College, Moshiur Rahman, president of Narsingdi Press Club Abdur Rahman Bhuiyan and BSS Narsingdi district correspondent Mohammad Abu Taher, among others ,spoke on the occasion.

CHITTAGONG, Nov 1 : The members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered one LG, one gun and one bullet from Fakirghola area under Moheshkhali upazila of the district on Friday. Tk 20000 realised as fine in Panchagarh

PANCHAGARH, Nov 2: A mobile court here on Saturday in raids at Debiganj upazila Bazar realized Taka 20,000 as fine from Imran Biscuit Factory. The Mobile Court led by first class Magistrate Md. Ziauddin Ahmed and Debiganj thana police during their anti-adulteration drive found that the factory were preparing food items in an unhygienic condition and fined the factory, reports UNB.

32 rescued from C’ganj borders

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Nov 3 : Members of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) rescued 32 persons from Bakchar village under sadar upazila on Saturday night, who were being trafficked to India by a gang of human traffickers. BDR sources said, acting on a tip-off, a patrol team of the border guards raided the abandoned house at Bakchar inside the country, 500 metres off the border and found the persons waiting for crossing the border under the cover of darkness and rescued them. The rescued persons included 18 male, 10 women and four children, BDR sources said, reports UNB.

Six held in Chittagong

CHITTAGONG, Nov 3: Police arrested six persons from different villages under Mirsharai upazila of the district on Friday. They were Nur Hossain and Shamsul Alam, Habibur Rahman, Shahidul Islam, Jaman and Jasim Uddin. A number of cases were pending against them in different thanas, police said. reports UNB.

Fake examinee held in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, Nov 3: One fake examinee was arrested here while appearing in the written test on behalf of an- other for the post of primary teachers at Beltia Madrasa centre in the district on Friday, police said. Sources said Mursheda, 22, of Sanjer Para of Sarishabari upazila was giving proxy on behalf of her younger sister Mahmuda. She was handed over to Sadar thana police, reports UNB.
