Cyclone rips through coastal region: 11 killed

The cyclonic storm Reshmi ripped through southern and southeastern parts of the country in the early hours of yesterday leaving at least 11 people killed, many fishermen missing and hundreds of mud houses damaged.
The tropical storm attaining a speed of 50 mile per hour lashed the Khulna-Barisal region damaging crops on vast areas of land, uprooting numerous trees, electrical and telephone poles, officials said.
Offshore islands and coastal areas were swept by a tidal surge of up to two meters above normal, but details of casualties were yet to be available.

Devaluation of Taka ruled out: BB Governor asks RMG exporters to be careful about deals

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Salehuddin Ahmed yesterday ruled out the possibility of local currency (Taka) devaluation at this moment, demanded by exporters, but suggested to be careful about any deal with their buyers in view of the current global financial crisis.
"There is a recent tendency that importers place huge orders when they reach the verge of bankruptcy. So, the exporters, particularly in the RMG sector must remain alert," he said at a press conference at Bangladesh Bank.

Khaleda decides to contest polls

BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia yesterday announced that she would participate in the forthcoming parliamentary elections on December 18.
"There is no hurdles on my path for contesting in the polls, " she said while exchanging views with the journalists at the new party office at Banani in the city.
Begum Zia said she would be enrolled in the voter list soon.
When asked from where and how many constituencies she would contest, the BNP chairperson said, " My party (BNP) along with four-party alliance would take the decision regarding the matter".

The greatest success of the Election Commission is to place gender issue at the centre of politics, if not surmounting all problems facing the December 18 parliamentary polls.
Even the Jamaat-e-Islami, a political party theocratic in character has been pursuaded to induct eves in the various tiers of their organisation. Hitherto they refused to believe in women leadership. The Election commission in the amended RPO made a provision that no political party can contest the upcoming December 18 election unless women were adequately represented there.

Inflow of record number of vehicles: Traffic jam worsens

Though Dhaka Metropolitan Police has altered city bus routes in September to reduce traffic jam, unplanned routes, faulty bus design, unskilled drivers and transport workers have contributed to the unrelenting congestion in the city.
Besides, a record number of vehicles (both legally and illegally) were imported in the last 8 months of this year. Increase in the fare of parking space at the Customs House could not stop the inflow of vehicles. If these vehicles are put on the roads of the capital, distress of commuters will multiply.

CA tells C’wealth Secy Gen: CG wants next polls to be model for future elections

UNB, Dhaka

Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed said yesterday that the present government wants the next general election to be a model for all future elections by making sure that voters can cast vote freely and without fear.
The remark came when visiting Commonwealth secretary general Kamalesh Sharma made a courtesy call on the head of the caretaker government at the CA's office discussing election, state of emergency, institutional reforms, socioeconomic progress and global economy.
