Medical board suggests sending Pankaz abroad for treatment

A medical board, formed to examine Pankaj Kumar Debnath, General Secretary of Swechasebok League, has recommended sending him abroad for better medical treatment immediately.
The medical board headed by Professor Dr Sirajul Karim, Chairman of Surgery Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University ((BSMMU), in a written statement claims that there are some material substance inside Pankaj's body and spine. As a result, his physical condition is worsening day by day.
" We are of the opinion for urgent MRI of the patient. But in presence of fero magnetic metallic substance in his spinal and abdominal region, MRI is not possible in our country. So the patient needs to be transfered to any better equipped centre abroad," said the statement.
Foundation training course for agri scientists at BARD begins

A four-month foundation- training course for the scientists of Agriculture Research System (NARS) kicked off at the Bangladesh Academy for rural Development (BARD) Comilla yesterday.
Sponsored by the Bangladesh Agriculture Research council (BARC), BARD has been imparting this training course for 40 scientists of different research institutes under NARS like Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), and Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI).
The main thrust of the course would be to inculcate a uniform perception in all officers by imparting theoretical and practical knowledge on administration and development of Bangladesh as a whole, said a release of BARD received here.
Building positive attitude among the officers so that they could create a congenial environment for people's participation in all development activities would also be emphasized.
Director General of BARD M Khairul Kabir formally inaugurated the course as chairperson while Director (Training and Manpower) of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC) Dr SM Khalilur Rahman spoke on the occasion as Guest of Honor. Director (Training), BARD, Md Mir Kashem and Director (Training and Communication), BARI and Course Director and Join Director, BARD Md Shafiqul Islam also spoke in the inaugural session.
Kabir hoped that participants as a group of very promising agriculture scientists could make their contribution by raising crop production in the country.
He said, the training would further develop decision - making ability and sharpen analytical skills of the participants.
Nobel laureate Ernst due today

Nobel Laureate (Chemistry in 1991) Professor Richard R. Ernst arrives here today on a three-day visit at the invitation of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS).
Professor Ernst will deliver a lecturer at DU Senate Bhaban today at 3 pm in honour of late Professor Dr M O Ghani, former Vice-chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) and founder fellow of the BAS.
Professor Ernst, a Swiss citizen, will give another lecture on 'My Pathway To Science and Beyond' at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre at 4 pm to be organized by Southwest University on October 28, a BAS press release said yesterday.
Blood donation programme held at DU
BSS, Dhaka
The Jagannath Hall authorities arranged a voluntary blood donation programme on Saturday to mark the October 15 Dhaka University (DU) mourning day.
On this day in October 15, 1985 a total of 39 students, employees and guests were killed when the roof of the assembly building (now October Smriti Bhaban) collapsed on them. They were watching television at that time.
DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor AFM Yusuf Haider inaugurated the programme as the chief guest while Jagannath Hall Provost Dr Ajoy Kumar Das presided it.
A large number DU student donated their blood in the programme.
Call to stop cutting of trees indiscriminately

Sylhet Division Development Student Action Council, Dhaka University yesterday organised a human chain programme at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla of Dhaka University protesting cutting of trees at Khasia Palli at Srimangal in Moulvibazar district.
Advocate Abed Raja, President of Sylhet Division Development Action Council, spoke at the programme as chief guest chair with Ehsanul Haque Jasim, President of the council in the chair.
The programme was conducted by Mohammod Alamgir, joint secretary of the council, while Jannatul Fardous, Imon Ahmed, Enamul Haque, Khaleda Jasmin Mithila, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Speakers said felling of trees is very harmful to our environment. Different animals will be affected due to the felling of trees indiscriminately. They called upon the government to stop felling of the trees.
Prof Abu Hossain new VC of JN Varsity

Professor Dr Abu Hossain Siddiq of the Management Studies Department of Dhaka University was appointed new vice-chancellor of Jagannath University yesterday for the next four years.
A Notification of the Education Ministry said Prof Siddiq has been discharging his duties as the acting VC and Treasurer of the same university.
Prof Siddiq has been in the teaching profession at Dhaka and Rajshahi Universities since 1972.
No room for terrorism in Islam

Speakers at a seminar said yesterday there is no room for terrorism in Islam as it is a religion of peace, harmony, tolerance and humanity.
They were addressing at a seminar on 'Terrorism and Islamic Concept of Jihad' organised by the Dr Serajul Huq Islami Research Centre at the Arts building on Dhaka University (DU) campus.
DU Pro-vice-chancellor Prof AFM Yusuf Haider presided over the seminar while DU Prof ANM Roise Uddin presented the keynote paper.
Prof Roise Uddin, in his keynote paper, said the Great Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (SM), the symbol of peace, welfare and kindness, during his life had cherished and preached the teachings of Islam and made it sustainable at the social and state systems.
Referring to the initiatives of the Prophet, including establishment of social justice, women's rights, social equality, human rights irrespective of race, caste and creed, and balanced distribution of wealth, Prof Roise said, "Islam teaches us sacrifice, instead of earthly pleasure."
Prof Yusuf Haider said the ideology of Rasul Karim (SM) always inspires the human beings to follow the path of truth and justice for all times and for welfare.
He urged the Muslims to acquire knowledge as the Great Prophet gave optimum importance on it.
He said Islam is modern, life-oriented, fit for all ages and a centre for solving all problems, as it is the holy bondage of harmony of eternal and earthly lives.
Prof Syed Anwar Hossain, Prof Muhammad Abdul Malek, Prof Muhammad Abdul Baki and Prof M Elias also spoke.
