Murder in Ctg: One to die, 10 get life term

The Speedy Trial Tribunal (STT) in the port city today ordered death penalty to a first degree murderer and life-term imprisonment to 10 of his accomplices.

Judge of the tribunal Mohammad Shafiqul Karim also asked the accomplices of the murderer to pay Taka 10 thousand each as penalty or to serve two more years in the jail.

The verdict came on the murder of Utpal Barua, an Advanced level student, that took place near the United Nations Park in the city on March 4, 2006.

The murderer put on the death row is identified as Mohammad Ibrahim. He and four of his 10 accomplices now absconding and were tried in absentia.

Sufal Hossain, Faisal Khan, Mohammad Rashed, Rupam Das, Mohammad Mijan, Ishtiaque Hossain, Shahidul Islam, Rabiul Hossain, Iqbal Hossain and Liton Biswas were given life term jail for assisting the murderer.

The convicts stabbed Utpal Barua to death over an old enmity while he was going to a coaching center. He succumbed to his wounds on the way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Parents of the victim recorded a murder a case with the local police station in this connection. Police, after investigation, submitted charge sheet accusing 11 youths of the pre-planned killing.

The case was later sent to the Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal from the District and Sessions Judge Court in January this year.
