Proper implementation of ADP stressed

Secretary of the Ministry of Planning Jafar Ahamed Chowdhury on Thursday underscored the need for proper implementation of the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for smooth development of the country.
He said this while exchanging views with the government officials on progress of the ADP projects in the district. Deputy Commissioner Md Ziaur Rahman Khan gave the address of welcome at the meeting.
The planning secretary reviewed the progress of ADP and gave some instructions for proper implementation of the development projects within the stipulated period.
Mayor Mahmud Al Noor Tarek, Additional Deputy Commissioners Md Mohsin and Ratanchandra Pandit, Additional Police Super Aktaruzzaman and Civil Surgeon Dr Shamsul Alam, among others, were present.
Later, he attended a function at local Shilpakala Academy where GPA-5 holders of the Sadar upazila were accorded a reception. He distributed certificates and crests among the GPA 5 holders.
3 persons nabbed, cocktails, phensidyl seized in Rajshahi

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5 personnel, during anticrime drives arrested three suspected criminals and seized cocktails and Phensidyl from Nagar in Chapainawabganj, RAB sources said on Thursday.
Besides, a RAB team, on a tip-off conducted a surprise raid in Punchbibi Sub-registry office under Joypurhat district and arrested acting sub-registrar Sambhunath Karmaker, 52, and revenue collector Narayan Kumar Ghosh, 49, allagedly for taking bribe of Taka 4,080 from a land-owner and seized the money from their possessions.
During a drive conducted at Nagar village in Chapainawabgonj district, a RAB team seized 19 molotov cocktails and some bomb- making ingredients and arrested three persons in this connection. The arrested were identified as Mahidul, 38, Mohsin Ali, 40, and Saiful Islam, 42, all residents of the same area. A RAB team seized 100 bottles of Phensidyl during another raid conducted at Buzruk Harina village under Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur district. But none could be arrested in this connection. The RAB teams handed over the arrested persons, seized money, explosives and drugs to the concerned police stations after recording separate cases in these connections.
Call to create congenial atmosphere for JS polls

BNP Joint Secretary of central committee Babu Chandra Roy called upon the all leaders and workers to come forward to strength the hand of the former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. He also demanded to free all political prisoners, to make congenial atmosphere of parliamet election and to withdraw emergency in a workers' meeting of BNP upazila unit at Bonapara Degree College field in Baraigram upazila of Natore district on October 13.
Former Member of Parliament (MP) Principal Md Ekramul Alam presided over the meeting with the Joint Secretary Gayeshwar Chandra Roy was present as chief guest and the Organising Secretary of BNP central committee Md Shahjahan was present as special guest.
It was also addressed among others by Natore district Secretary Md Shahidul Islam (Bachchu), Baraigram Upazila Secretary Md Hazrat Ali, Professor Md Sazder Rahman, Headmaster Abdul Kader (B.Sc), Md Abul Khayer, Md Nurul Islam and Bonpara Pouro Mayor Md Sanaullah Nur Babu. Anti-TB workshop held in Chuadanga

A day-long workshop on Anti-Tuberculosis (T.B) for journalists, government officers, social workers was held at Chuadanga Press Club auditorium hall on Tuesday.
D.C of Chuadanga Makhlasur Rahman attended the workshop as the chief guest with Azad Molita, President of Chuadanga Press Club in the chair. ASP Rezaul Haque Raza,. Reazul Islam Toton Chairman of Chuadanga Pourasava, Dr Raton Shingh were special guests on the occasion.
Prof Zehadul Karim new VC of Comilla University

The government on Thursday appointed Prof Zehadul Karim, former member of University Grants Commission (UGC) and founder chairman of Anthropology Department of Rajshahi University (RU), as Vice-Chancellor of Comilla University (CU).
President and Chancellor of the universities Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed gave the appointment, RU official sources said. Prof Karim, who obtained M A and PhD from Syracuse University in USA, joined RU Sociology Department as a lecturer in 1974.
He was the chairman of Sociology Department of the university during 1990-1995 and joined as chairman of Anthropology Department in 1998.
Born at Nowapara village under Laksham upazila of Comilla district, Prof Karim earned recognition as an anthropologist at home and abroad.
5-day young artists exhibition begins today in Ctg

A 5-day painting exhibition of young artists from Chittagong and Kolkata begins in the port city from Saturday (October 18).
Assistant High Commission of India , Chittagong is organizing the arts show as part of developing further the existing cultural relations between the two countries. The exhibition titled "vicinity" will be held at the gallery of Assistant High Commission office of India in Chittagong and will remain open everyday from 3 p.m to 7 p.m. High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty will inaugurate the exhibition today afternoon a press release said.
National Sanitation Campaign month held in Mymensingh

National Sanitation Campaign Month, October 2008 began in Mymensingh on Oct. 14. A grand rally was brought out from D.C office premises and paraded main streets of he town and ended in D.C. office. A discussion meeting was held at Zilla Parishad Auditorium. Md. Ziaur Rahman Khan, D.C. (Mym.) was present as chief guest. A.D.C (General) Md. Mohsin presided over the meeting. 6 shops, jute godown gutted in Narail

Six shops including a jute godown were gutted in a fire at Lohagara Bazar in Narail district on Thursday night at about 8 PM.
The fire originated from a jute godown where about 350 maunds jute were stored and rapidly spread to six adjoining shops, said owner of the godown Sirajul Islam.
A firefighting unit from Narail Fire Station rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after one hour and a half. The estimated loss of the fire is about 10 lakh.
Antique dealer threatened to death in Rupganj

One Nurul Islam 48, son a late Azam Ali of Barpa Bagan Bari village under Rupganj Upazila in Narayanganj has been threatened to death by unknown miscreants for some days unless Tk. 50,000 as extortion money is paid. He hailing from Kapasia upazila, Gazipur, built a dwelling house buying a small plot here and is leading his family consisting of 5 members running a small business of antique goods.
According to his family, someone has been threatening him to pay Tk. 50,000 as extortion money by phone call otherwise he must be killed.
It may be mentioned that one of his daughters, student of class IX of Hazi Nuruddin Ahmed High School fell a victim to snatching.
In broad day light her gold made Necklace was snatched by some miscreants some days ago blocking her on the way of school.

33 people arrested in Rajshahi
Rahsgagu: Oct 16: Police, in different anticrime drives, nabbed 33 people on various charges from different areas in city and nine upazilas of the district in last 24 hours till yesterday evening, police said. Of them, 17 were arrested from different areas in the metropolis while 16 others from nine upazilas. Traffic police lodged 30 cases under the motor vehicles ordinance and seized a motorbike without registration during drives against the non-registered motor vehicles and other document related malpractices in different parts of the city during the time, report BSS.
CU classes resume after vacation
Chittagong Oct 6: Chittagong University (CU) classes resumed on Thursday after a month- long Ramadan and Puja vacation. Scheduled examinations also took place, campus sources said. Students' attendance was normal, they added. Proctor Dr Mohammad Jasim Uddin described the campus atmosphere as "quite normal." But, he said, the authorities arranged tight security on the campus to avoid untoward incidents, report BSS.
