Event: Folk songs at Rabindra Sarobar To observe World Sight Day

The World Sight Day is the annual day of awareness for blindness and visual impairment and is held on the second Thursday of October. Included in the official calendar of World Health Organisation (WHO), it is coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) under the Vision 2020 global initiative. Each year the World Sight Day (WSD) is celebrated on a particular theme and the theme of this year's WSD was eyes on the future: fighting vision impairment in later life because through out the world population are ageing and individuals are living longer and blindness from chronic conditions are also increasing.

In Bangladesh, 750,000 adults are blind and 90 per cent of these blind are more than 50 years of age. The main reasons of blindness among the elderly peoples are cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. To create awareness among the mass people each year Orbis observed the day through series of remarkable events. This year also Orbis celebrated the WSD through events and discussion.

One of such event was organising a folk program at Rabindra Sarobar at Dhanmondi in the city on October 10. Three renowned folk teams from Mymensingh, Sherpur and Tangail performed in the program and disseminated eye health awareness message on the ageing eye problem specially cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. The program was participated by around 3,000 audiences.

It is to mention that in Bangladesh 550,000 adult are suffering from cataract and every year another 110,000 cataract patients are added to this number. Other than cataract 5 per cent of total adult people in the country are suffering from diabetic and one out of every five diabetic patient is attacked by diabetic retinopathy which is a severe blinding condition in the eye where blood supply of the retina becomes fragile and later bleed chronically. If not treated at an early stage, near-to-total blindness is inevitable.

Drama serial 'Samudrajol' to be aired on Banglavision at 8:25pm today. Mohan Khan and Sohel Arman have jointly scripted and directed the drama serial.

Gazi Rakayet, Lutfar Rahman George, Shahed Sharif Khan, Shahriar Nazim Joy, Sohel Arman, Litu Anam, Arman Parvez Murad, Bonya Mirza, Chandni, Tanima Hamid, Sharmin Shila, Ria, Nisho, Sajal, Rashed Khan, Rahi, Tania, among others, performed in the serial.

Story of Samudrajol:

Rusho and Odhora married silently. They went to Cox's Bazar for honeymoon. After passing some days, their collection of money was end. Then he took permission from his wife and return to Dhaka. As a result, Rusho's wife became lonely. In one hand, while returning Dhaka Rusho faced an accident. Then he lost his memories. On the other hand, Odhora was waiting for Rusho in Cox's Bazar. The story went on.

'Mejodidi' written by Sharatchandra Chattapaddhya is now to be aired as drama serial on Channel i. The first episode of the drama serial is to be aired at 8:25pm from October 16. Muztaba Saud has scripted the drama and film actress Rozina gave direction.

Abul Hayat, Pranab Bhatta, Rozina, Tele Samad, Kazi Asad, Shirin Alam, Mahbub, Shoma, Lenin, Subrata, Saju, Maruf, Zebunnesa, Sajat Hasan Bablu, child artiste Brishti and Shuvo performed in the serial.

A new drama serial 'Naior' to be aired on Rtv at 9:40pm today. Sohel Arman has scripted and directed the serial.

Chitralekha Guha, KS Firoz, Shahed, Sumaiya Shimu, Ahsanul Haque Minu, Shirin Alam, Kohinur, Babu, among others, performed in the serial.

Story of Naior:

Soumik Roy Chowdhury is the only son of a landlord. He recently completed his graduation. His parent was tensed about him. Soumik had no interest to get married. But his parent wanted to get marriage with Mohini.

When his wedding day came nearer he started to love Madhobi, a girl of a poor caste person. Soumik's parent did not accept their relationship. But Soumik married Madhobi. As a result, Mohini became anger with Madhobi. She did not accept their happy conjugal life. The story went on.

Album News: Bengal Music releases Sajeeb’s Mon Uchaton

Popular music production house Bengal Music Co Ltd recently released solo Nazrul Sangeet album of Tanveer Alam Sajeeb.

There are 10 songs in the album. Lyrics and tunes of all songs were composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam. Tanveer Alam Sajeeb gave music and instrumental direction for the album. Buno was in base guitar.

Songs are - 1) Uchaton mon, 2) Tepantorer mathe, 3) Rumjhum, 4) Eki ashim piyasha, 5) Gangye jowar elo, 6) Elo bonante, 7) Elo bonante, 8) Arunkanti, 9) Ami chirotore and 10) Bodhu tomar amar.

About the album Sajeeb said, "I got my primary education on music from my father and from that time I got inspiration from Nazrul songs. In this album, I have tried to represent those songs in different tracks. I have tried my best to give a different touch to the listeners."

TV Serial: Ntv airs Brishtir jonno tonight

Ntv will air drama serial 'Brishtir jonno' at 9:45pm today. Pantha Shahriar has scripted the 26-episode drama serial, while Amlan Biswas has directed it.

Aupi Karim, Abul Hayat, Ferdousi Majumder, Tropa Majumder, Shahiduzzaman Selim, Shams Sumon, Shatabdi Wadud, Intekhab Dinar, Raunak Hasan, among others, performed in the serial.

Ashraf Kaiser starts Election Express on Banglavision

Popular current affairs television talk show hosted by Ashraf Kaiser has conceptualised and hosting a new series of election special programme 'Election Express' to be aired every Thursday at 11:25pm on Banglavision starting from October 16. The programme is produced by Lemon Communications.

At the end of 2008 voters in Bangladesh and the United States will go the polls for the national elections that are among the most significant in their respective democratic histories. The programme will discuss and analyse Bangladesh and US election issues, political culture, party management, voter's rights and issues related to good governance and accountability through elections in an interactive manner with studio guests and peoples participations. The first episode to be aired at 11:25pm today is on the elections and the roles of political parties where Awami League presidium members Tofael Ahmed, senior BNP leader Dr Osman Faruk and Professor of Government and Politics Dr Dilara Chowdhury shared their individual and party point of views, analysed the issues and made the debate interesting as panel guests along with people's representation through field surveys in different locations.
