News briefs One beaten to death in Naogaon NAOGAON, Oct 13: A man was beaten to death by his neighbours at Shyampur village in Porsha upazila Thursday evening. Local people said Jagoa, 45, son of Dulu of the village in drunken condition went to a local fair arranged on the occasion of Durga Puja. He looked askance at Abdur Rahman who recently embraced Islam and at one stage started shouting insults at him at the fair. Being angered at this, Abdur Rahman and his father Bishu beat Jagoa mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot, reports UNB. One succumbs to injury in Barguna BARGUNA, Oct 13: Abdul Khaleque Huzur, 55, of Khajurtala village in Sadar upazila, who was injured in an attack by some youths on September 29, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital Friday. Family sources said about 9-10 men led by co-villager Shaheed hacked him mercilessly following a previous enmity after tactfully taking him to the house of Shaheed's brother-in-law, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to the DMCH where he died on Friday morning. A case was filed with the police, reports UNB. 35-kg hemp recovered in Comilla COMILLA, Oct 13: Some 35 kgs of hemp were recovered from Shahidal Madhyapara village in Brahmanpara upazila Friday. Police said acting on a tip-off, they raided the house of drug peddler Gafur Miah and recovered the hemp. But sensing the presence of the law enforcers Gafur managed to flee. A case was filed against him under Narcotics Control Act, reports UNB. Three killed in snakebite in Manikganj MANIKGANJ, Oct 13: Three people were killed in snakebite in separate incidents in Sadar and Saturia upazilas on Wednesday night. Hospital sources said a poisonous snake bit Shahabuddin, 25, at Jagir village in Sadar upazila when he was going to a nearby tea stall at about 7 pm. Local people said Alamgir of Meghshimul village in the upazila and Tuli Rajbangshi, 30, wife of Gobinda Rajbangshi of Janna village in Saturia upazila fell sick after snakes bit them on the same day. They were rushed to the Sadar hospital where they died, reports UNB. 2 killed in Joypurhat road crash JOYPURHAT, Oct 13: Two people were killed and 40 others injured when a truck turned turtle on Joypur-Bogra highway in Shishi-Nazirpur-Nimtali area of Khethlal upazila Friday night. Witnesses said Manik, son of Nurul Islam of Latifpur village in Sadar upazila, died on the spot. Police said the accident took place at about 9pm when the driver of a Bogra-bound truck from Panchbibi upazila, carrying hotel workers, lost control over the steering. The injured were admitted to Kalai Upazila Health Complex and district modern hospital. Later, some of the inured were shifted to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where an unidentified man died, reports UNB. One held with VGF rice MYMENSINGH, Oct 13: A man was arrested along with nine and half sacks of rice allocated under VGF programme from Ghoshgaon Bazaar in Dhobaura upazila on Friday morning. Local people caught M Mofizuddin, 50, of Jigatala village of the upazila when he went to sell the rice in the black market. On information, police, led by local UNO Sultan Alam, rushed to the spot and arrested him. On primary interrogation, Mofiz said he bought the rice at Tk 1,200 per maund when Union Parishad Secretary M Rafiqul Islam brought those to his shop on Thursday evening, reports UNB.
