Administrative coop with ASHC to be ensured: BAU VC

Distinguished scientists Prof. Dr. H. S. Prakash, Coordinator, Asian Seed Health Centre (ASHC) under DANIDA Programme along with Prof. Dr. S. R Niranjana, Chairman, Department of Applied Botany and Biotechnology of the University of Mysore, India called on Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain during their week-long visit at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). They discussed matters on academic interest including establishment of relationship between Asian Seed Health Centre of India, Danish Seed Health Centre (DSHC), Denmark and other countries of the world for the cooperation and coordination of joint research, training and publication and to explore the opportunity for funding by DANIDA and other donors.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain expressed his satisfaction and ensured full administrative cooperation to achieve the academic goal. He also desired all sorts of cooperation from the visiting scientists to go forward with the existing resources of Seed Pathology Centre for the development of agricultural science. Prof. Dr. M. Ayub Ali, Director, SPC was present during the meeting.
During their week-long visit at BAU, Prof. Dr. M. Ayub Ali, Director, Seed Pathology Centre (SPC) of Bangladesh and the ASHC representatives Dr. H. S. Prakash and Dr. S. R. Niranjana discussed academic and research issues which were considered to be included in the future collaboration.
The areas identified for research cooperation are: Molecular database of Seed-borne Pathogens, Molecular diagnosis, Biological control, Mycotoxins, Explore possibilities of research/training cooperation, Identify areas of common interest: Host - Pathogen combinations, Ph.D. programmes, Exchange of Scientists/students between cooperating centres, Joint publications in high impact journals and patents and E-module of seed health training curriculum.
It may be mentioned here that Danish Seed Health Centre (DSHC) has established two Regional centres with DANIDA support namely, Asian Seed Health Centre - Mysore, India and African Seed Health Centre - Tanzania, Africa.
Nizami for participation of all leaders in polls

Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Bang-ladesh Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami today demanded creation of an atmosphere so that participation of all political leaders is ensured.
"None should be kept outside the elections," he said while addressing as the chief guest at Shaheed Satu Hall here this afternoon.
He also demanded lifting of emergency for holding a free and fair election and fixing the date of upazila election after a reasonable gap from the date of the national elections. Nizami praised the government for preparing the voters' list with photographs with the help of the members of the armed forces.
Chaired by Ameer of Chapainawabganj District Jamaat Rafiqul Islam, the function was also addressed by Publicity Secretary of Jamaat Tasnim Alam, Secretary of Dhaka City Jamaat Nurul Islam Bulbul and Nayeb-e-Ameer of Chapainawabganj District Jamaat Latifur Rahman.

40 sacks of rice seized in Jamalpur

Police seized 40 sacks of rice from a house at Valuka village under Sadar Upazila of the district on Friday.
Acting on a tip-off, Sadar thana police raided the house of one Zulhas at Valuka village and seized the rice.
Police said, the rice was sanctioned for VGF cardholders but some dishonest persons kept it at the said house for selling in the black market. A case was registered with Sadar thana police in this connection.
Boatman slaughtered to death in Narail

Unidentified miscreants slaughtered a boatman to death at a village in Narail district on October 4 last. The deceased was identified as Abdus Sattar,40, son of Late Abdur Rahman of Pankabila village of Narail Sadar upazila, Police and family sources said, boatman Abdus Sattar Fakir was returning home at midnight after his day's work. On the way some miscreants took him forcibly to the paddy field and slaughtered to death. Police recovered the body from the spot the following day and sent it to Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
SI Gopal Ganesh Biswas of Narail Sadar Thana told, investigation is going on. Officials of Police department visited the place of occurrence. But no case has been filed yet.
Two timber traders held for giving bribe in N’ganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) today arrested two timber traders from Adamzee Nagar area of the district while trying to give bribe to the RAB members for releasing a truck seized by them.
Police sources said, the arrested were Shafiqul Islam, 40, of Sardarpara village of Munshiganj district and Ruhul Amin, 45, of Maheshpur village of the same district.
Sources said, the RAB members seized the truck loaded with illegal segun teak from Dhaka-Chittagong highway near Siddhirganj on October 9 while coming towards Dhaka. The timber traders were arrested when they were trying to give Taka 30,000 to RAB members Abdul Aziz and Rafique as bribe to get release of the seized truck, the sources said. They are now in police custody at Siddhirganj thana.
Cow lifter with six stolen cattleheads held in Ctg

District police here in separate drives arrested an alleged robber from Chandanaish upazila in the district last night and a cow lifter from Charlokkhya area on the outskirt of the city early this morning.
The arrested Mohammed Ali, 45, son of Islam Meah Chowdhury of Chandanaish sadar area is accused of at least 12 criminal cases of various nature which have been pending with Rangunia, Raozan, Hathazari, Sitakunda, Chandgaon and Chandanaish police stations in the district, the police said.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Chandanaish police nabbed him while he was roaming suspiciously in the upazila sadar area at about 9 PM last night.
Karnaphuli thana police picked up Kamal Ahmed, 34, of Charlokhya area along with 6 stolen cows in the early morning today. The police said, Kamal, a notorious cow thief lifted the animals from a village under Pukuria union of Banshkhali Upazila midnight last night.
Separate cases have been filed with respective police stations in this connection, sources said.

Mofiz Ali, noted trade union leader of tea gardens and language veteran, died of brain haemorrhage at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital on Friday. He was 82, family sources said. Mofiz Ali is survived by two sons, one daughter and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
He was buried at his family graveyard at Dupatila village under Kamalganj Upazila in the district following a namaz-e-janaza on Friday afternoon.
Mofiz Ali, also a Vice-President of Bangladesh Trade Union and a leader of National Democratic Party, had been suffering from a head injury. He was actively involved in language movement in 1952. Mofiz Ali was admitted to hospital on August 30 after he received serious head injury in a road accident five weeks ago.
Smuggled goods seized, 10 held in Joypurhat

Police in separate drives, arrested 10 persons from different places of five upazilas in the district on Friday.
Police said, the arrested were fugitives, drug-peddlers, thieves, cheats and accused persons in different cases including anti-social activities.
Police recovered Phensidyl, sarees and other illegal goods, worth about Taka 30,000 from the arrested persons. Separate cases were filed with concerned police stations in these connections.

One beaten to death in Naogaon
NAOGAON, Oct 13: A man was beaten to death by his neighbours at Shyampur village in Porsha upazila Thursday evening. Local people said Jagoa, 45, son of Dulu of the village in drunken condition went to a local fair arranged on the occasion of Durga Puja. He looked askance at Abdur Rahman who recently embraced Islam and at one stage started shouting insults at him at the fair. Being angered at this, Abdur Rahman and his father Bishu beat Jagoa mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot, reports UNB.
One succumbs to
injury in Barguna
BARGUNA, Oct 13: Abdul Khaleque Huzur, 55, of Khajurtala village in Sadar upazila, who was injured in an attack by some youths on September 29, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital Friday. Family sources said about 9-10 men led by co-villager Shaheed hacked him mercilessly following a previous enmity after tactfully taking him to the house of Shaheed's brother-in-law, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to the DMCH where he died on Friday morning. A case was filed with the police, reports UNB.
35-kg hemp recovered in Comilla
COMILLA, Oct 13: Some 35 kgs of hemp were recovered from Shahidal Madhyapara village in Brahmanpara upazila Friday. Police said acting on a tip-off, they raided the house of drug peddler Gafur Miah and recovered the hemp. But sensing the presence of the law enforcers Gafur managed to flee. A case was filed against him under Narcotics Control Act, reports UNB.
Three killed in snakebite in Manikganj
MANIKGANJ, Oct 13: Three people were killed in snakebite in separate incidents in Sadar and Saturia upazilas on Wednesday night. Hospital sources said a poisonous snake bit Shahabuddin, 25, at Jagir village in Sadar upazila when he was going to a nearby tea stall at about 7 pm. Local people said Alamgir of Meghshimul village in the upazila and Tuli Rajbangshi, 30, wife of Gobinda Rajbangshi of Janna village in Saturia upazila fell sick after snakes bit them on the same day. They were rushed to the Sadar hospital where they died, reports UNB.
2 killed in Joypurhat road crash
JOYPURHAT, Oct 13: Two people were killed and 40 others injured when a truck turned turtle on Joypur-Bogra highway in Shishi-Nazirpur-Nimtali area of Khethlal upazila Friday night. Witnesses said Manik, son of Nurul Islam of Latifpur village in Sadar upazila, died on the spot. Police said the accident took place at about 9pm when the driver of a Bogra-bound truck from Panchbibi upazila, carrying hotel workers, lost control over the steering. The injured were admitted to Kalai Upazila Health Complex and district modern hospital. Later, some of the inured were shifted to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where an unidentified man died, reports UNB.
One held with VGF rice
MYMENSINGH, Oct 13: A man was arrested along with nine and half sacks of rice allocated under VGF programme from Ghoshgaon Bazaar in Dhobaura upazila on Friday morning. Local people caught M Mofizuddin, 50, of Jigatala village of the upazila when he went to sell the rice in the black market. On information, police, led by local UNO Sultan Alam, rushed to the spot and arrested him. On primary interrogation, Mofiz said he bought the rice at Tk 1,200 per maund when Union Parishad Secretary M Rafiqul Islam brought those to his shop on Thursday evening, reports UNB.
