Concerted efforts to eradicate leprosy underscored

The speakers at a function stressed the need for ensuring and strengthening healthcare services to the leprosy patients to eliminate leprosy from the society through the united and coordinated efforts between and NGO. "Leprosy which is a chronic infectious disease caused by M. Leprae, and acid fast, robs happed bacillus affects the skin, the peripheral nerves mucosa of the upper respiratory tract and also the eyes, apart from some other structures. This disease can be cured when the treatment is done timely and properly."
The experts stated this in a discussion meeting entitled Strengthening of Leprosy Services in Gaibandha district organised by Gaibandha Joypurhat Leprosy Care Project (GJLCP) at the conference room of Civil Surgeon (CS) here on Tuesday.
Professor Dr Probhat C. Barua, line director of TB Control and Leprosy Elimination Programme of DGHS addressed the meeting as chief guest. The key note paper on the issue was presented by Programme Manager (Leprosy) of DGHS Dr. Mozibor Rahman.
Presided over by CS Dr. M Shamsul Haque, the meeting was also addressed among others, by deputy programme manager (Leprosy) Dr Sharif Uddin and Dr Sheikh MA Hadi, Consultant of Chest Diseases clinic Dr MA Jalil and progrmame director of GJLCP Prodip B. Pramanik. The speakers also laid emphasis on the creating of much awareness among the people to make the Leprosy-elimination programme a success in the district.
More than 40 upazila health and family planning officers, resident medical officers, medical officer of disease control, medical technologists, TB-Leprosy control assistants, Leprosy control assistants and others participated in the meeting.
Durga Puja being celebrated in 426 mandops in Barisal dist

A five-day celebration of Sharodiya Durga Utsob, the main religious festival of the Bengali Hindu Community, has been started by performing 'Bodhan Ustav' in festive mood from Sunday in 426 Puja Mandops of the district.
It would be ended within 11:00 pm on Thursday night by immersion of the idols and images of the deities with solemnities and religious rituals.
Rakhal Chandra Dey and Manik Mukharjee Kudu, president and secretary of Barisal District Puja Udajapon Porishad, said these numbers included 21 mass (Sarbojonin) and 7 personal (Bektigato) Mandops of Barisal city, 12 mass and 1 personal Mandops of Sadar, 120 Mandops of Agoiljhara, 60 Mandops of Gournadi, 84 Mandops of Uzirpur, 44 Mandops of Bakerganj, 34 Mandops of Banaripara, 14 Mandops of Mehendiganj, 13 Mandops of Bauganj,09 Mandops of Muladi and 07 Mandops of Hizla upazilas of the district.
District administration allotted special financial grants and assured special security, undisrupted electricity and water supply, traffic control arrangements for the worshipers and visitors of the each Puja Mandop.
Mandops were colorfully and beautifully decorated with gates, electric lights and cultural functions, Aroti competitions, arranged in almost every Puja Mandop and religious discussions and other programmes also arranged at Dharma Rakkkhini and Ramakrishna Mission Math Mandops of the city.
Leaders of the different community called to maintain peaceful coexistences, religious and communal harmony during the Sharodiya Durga Puja Utsob.
26 launch passengers fall victim to 'Aggayan Party’, valuables looted

At least 26 home bound launch passengers from Dhaka lost their valuables after falling victims to 'Aggayan Party' in last six days from September 30 to October 5.
Barisal port police post, Kotwali police station and Shere Bangla Medical College Hospital sources said among the 26 victims still 11 are under treatment in hospitals and clinics.
Victims alleged that without involvements of launch staffs and escorts those criminal gang members could not commit such kinds of crimes and different launches specially named as Suravi, Parabat, Tipu plying on Barisal-Dhaka-Barisal routes became unrestricted loitering grounds of the 'Aggayan Party' criminals.
Hayatul Islam, Assistant Commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police, said that law enforcing agencies in uniform and plain cloths engaged to prevent this crime. Launch owners, staffs and escorts also asked to assist with us.
We always made wide propagations on river ports cautioning against 'Aggayan Party' gang and asked passengers not to purchase any food or beverage from flying vendors, hawkers or stations and not to make intimacy with unknown persons during journey.
But passengers violating our suggestions and instructions became victims of 'Aggayan Party' and usually on hurry to reach their destination avoiding filing allegations before law enforcing agencies, said ACP of BMP.
Body recovered at Rupganj

A dead of an unidentified young boy, about eighteen years old, was recovered by the Rupganj thana police from a sand field of Borpa area of Rupganj Upazila in Narayanganj in front of the Chief Textile Mills adjacent to Dhaka-Sylhet highway on 6th October.
Marks of injury were found on the dead body. The reason behind the killing was not known. The police sent the body to morgue for autopsy and lodged a case in this connection.

Suspected robber lynched in Rangpur

A suspected robber was killed and another injured seriously in a mass beating at Paglapir in Sadar upazila early Wednesday.
Police and witnesses said a gang of 8-10 robbers halted a night coach of Anita Paribahan, barricading Rangpur-Syedpur road with an electric pole in front of local Palli Bidyut Samity Office and later tried to snatch away cash and belongings from the passengers. The coach packed with homebound passengers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr was going to Nilphamari from Dhaka.
Hearing screams of passengers, local people came to the spot and caught two members of the gang-Kajol, 35, and Shabuj, 38, -- while others fled the scene. Later, the angry mob beat them severely, leaving Kajol dead and Sabuj injured at the scene. On information, police rushed to the scene and rescued injured Sabuj. Later, he was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
50 hurt in Kishoreganj road mishap

Around 50 people were injured in a head-on collision between two buses near Rashidabad Bailey bridge on Kishoreganj-Bhairab road Sunday morning.
Police said a bus of Ananya Paribahan coming from Kishoreganj collided with another bus of the same paribahan at about 9 am, leaving 50 passengers injured. Of the injured, Sparsha, 9, was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital while police constable of Pakundia thana Nani Gopal, 40, and Babu, 26, to Sadar Hospital.
Drivers and helpers of both the buses fled the scene soon after the accident.
Minor girl killed in Barisal road mishap

Tonny,08, daughter of rickshaw puller Zakir Hossain of Protapur under Babuganj upazila of Barisal succumbed to her injures at Barisal Shere Bangla Medical College Hospital on Saturday afternoon after he was a hit by a tempo at Satmail area on Barisal-Dhaka highway while crossing the road at about 1:30 pm.
Dead body of Tonny was handed other to relatives after lodging a case of unnatural death with Barisal Kotwali police station and tempo driver managed to flee away.
One activist of Allar Dal held in Gaibandha

A member of Allar Dal was held at Thutiapukur area in Palashbari Upazila of the district on Saturday.
The arrested was identified as Bipul Miah, 24, son of Ruhul Amin of Mohipur village under Edilpur Union of Sadullapur Upazila.

2 killed in Pabna road crash
PABNA, Oct 7: Two people were killed and another was critically injured in a road crash at Maligachha on Pabna-Ishwardi highway this (Sunday) morning. The deceased were identified as motorcyclist Nayan, 35, and his co-rider Ziaur Rahman, 28, of Febunia in Ishwardi upazila. Witnesses said the accident took place at about 11am when the Pabna-bound motorcycle crashed into a bus, leaving three people of the motorcycle injured. Of them, Nayan and Ziaur Rahman died at hospital. The injured, Shamsuddin, 30, was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment. Police seized the bus, reports UNB.
Valuables looted in Gazipur
GAZIPUR, Oct 7: Robbers stormed into a house at Deoliabari in Sadar upazila and looted cash and valuables worth Tk 7.50 lakh on Saturday night. Police said the gang numbering 10/12 entered into the house of Nurul Amin by cutting window grills at dead of night and looted Tk 3 lakh in cash, 17 tolas of gold ornaments and three mobile phone sets taking the house inmates hostage at gun point. Hearing the hue and cry local people chased the fleeing bandits and caught one of them identified as Habib, 25, along with a pipe gun. Other robbers, however, managed to flee along with the booties. The bandit was later handed over to the Joydevpur police after mass beating, reports UNB.

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Oct 7: Some 14 eminent personalities of Bholahat upazila were given reception on Saturday for their outstanding contribution to the society. The personalities are Dr Abul Hossain, Adv M Yahiya, Kalu Mahlat, Rameswar Das (posthumous), Nekjan Bibi, Alhaj Deen Mohammad Mondal, Fazr Ali Master, Ziaul Haque, Moinuddin Miah, Akhter Hossain, Dr Ashraful Haque Chunnu, Amzad Ali Biswas, Shaheen Ara Biswas and Manjur Ahmed Biswas (posthumous). The reception was arranged by Bholahat Press Club on its premises. The cover page of a book, "Gourabanga O Chapainawabganjer Prachin Nidorshon" written by journalist Salauddin, was also unveiled at the function, reports UNB.
Terrorist killed in Gazipur
GAZIPUR, Oct 7: An alleged terrorist was killed in an attack by local people at Ershad Nagar under Tongi thana on the Eid-day (Thursday) morning. The deceased was identified as Abdul Quddus, 28, a resident of Ershad Nagar block 4. Sources said when Quddus came to his house to see his mother after Eid prayers local people attacked the house and beat him mercilessly leaving him seriously injured. He was rushed to the Tongi government hospital and later he succumbed to his injuries on way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Police said Quddus, a listed terrorist of the area, was wanted in a number of criminal cases. Sahera Begum, mother of Quddus, filed a case with the Tongi thana against 14 people, reports UNB.
3 suspected robbers held in Jhalakati
Jhalakati, Oct 7: Three suspected robbers were arrested from Fakirhat village in Sadar upazila early Saturday. Villagers with the help of community police caught the robbers while they were taking preparation for committing a robbery in the village. The arrested robbers are Sabuj Hawlader, 28, of Patuakhali district, Joynal Matubbar, 29, of Matibhanga village in Madaripur district, and Halim Hawlader of Rajapur upazila of Jhalakati district. They were later handed over to the police, reports UNB.
