Bail to bigwigs upheld: SC rejects Govt, ACC appeals

UNB, Dhaka

The Chamber Judge of the Supreme Court yesterday threw away the government and Anti-Corruption Commission's pleas, upholding the High Court orders that had granted bails to a number of bigwig corrupt suspects.

The corrupt suspects are former ministers Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas and Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, ex-MPs Mosaddek Ali Falu and Mirza Azam, who is already released, and businessmen Gias Uddin Al Mamun and Giridhari Lal Modi.

Among them, the government and the ACC filed four stay petitions against businessman Mamun, three against Abbas, two against Modi and one each against the others.

After brief hearings on the pleas, Justice M Joynul Abedin advised the petitioners to file regular appeals against the High Court orders.

The stay petitions were moved as the government and the ACC prefer leave-to-appeal in a bid to overturn the High Court bail orders, court sources said.
