News briefs Phensidyl seized in Jessore Jessore, Sept 26 : Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel recovered 2,000 bottles of Indian phensidyl syrup from a truck at Bejpara in the district town early Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, a RAB team took position at Laujani crossing on Jessore-Benapole road and signaled the truck to halt. But the truck driver tried to flee ignoring the signal and later sensing danger left the vehicle at Bejpara, said the RAB source. The elite force later searched the truck and found 2,000 bottles of phensidyl syrup packed in a medicine carton, reports UNB. One chopped to death in Bogra Bogra, Sept 26 : A young man was chopped to death by some unknown assailants at his house at Kurigathi village in Dhunat upazila Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 25, son of Jesarat Ali, an employee of Rayganj Palli Bidyut office. Family sources said when Saiful was sleeping in his under construction house the assailants swooped on him at dead of night and chopped him to death. On information police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue. Victim's younger brother Saidul filed a case implicating their elder brother Abdul Haque and his wife Fulera Begum in the murder, reports UNB. Dacoit beaten to death in Narail Narail, Sept 26 : Local people surrounded a gang of robbers and beat one to death and rounded up another while they were looting a jute laden truck at Adnan in Srdar upazila early Thursday. Police said the robbers stopped the Jessore bound loaded truck from Narail town placing log on Narail-Jessore road at the point at abut 4.30am. They beat the driver and another rider indiscriminately and started looting the truck. Hearing the hue and cry, local people gheroaed the robbers and beat gang member Miraj, 30, to death and caught another one, identified as Hasan Sheikh while others managed to flee. Hasan was later handed over to the police after mass beating. Police said Miraj hailed from village Tilghari in Shalikha upazila of Magura district, reports UNB. 5 shops gutted in fire in Meherpur Meherpur, Sept 26 : Five shops were gutted in a fierce fire in the district town early on Friday. Witnesses said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at Swapan Hardware in the early hours and soon engulfed the adjoining four shops. On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after two hours of efforts with the help of local people. The gutted shops are Swapan Hardware, AK Decorator, Mrittunjoy Sweets, Boighar and Sarker Jewellers. The affected shop owners claimed that cash and valuables worth over Tk 5 lakh were gutted in the blaze, reports UNB. JMB man arrested in Khulna Khulna, Sept 25 : A member of outlawed Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) was arrested from Zahidur Rahman road in the city on Wednesday evening. Acting on a tip-off, detective branch of police arrested JMB cadre Tanvir Ahmed, 26, from a house at about 5 pm. He hailed from Satkhira district. Mother of Tanvir Ahmed, however, claimed that her son is a businessman not a JMB activist, reports UNB.
