Skilled manpower in knitting, linking machine for self-reliance stressed

The month-long training course on sweater knitting and linking machine operating (SKLMO) for the trainees of the 12th batch ended at the youth training centre (YTC) here.
The aim of the course was to create skilled and trained manpower to provide them with jobs in garments industries so that they could be self-reliant and eradicate Monga gradually from this region.
Bangladesh Army, Directorate of Youth Development (DYD) and District Administration jointly organised the training with the financial assistance of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters' Association (BGMEA) and BGMEA Institute of Fashion and Technology (BIFT).
A concluding ceremony was also held at the hall room of YTC at Tulshighat under Sadar Upazila on Tuesday with deputy director of DYD M. Abdur Razzak in the chair.
Additional District Magistrate M. Siddiqur Rahman addressed the function as the chief guest and Major M. Jahangir Alam of Gaibandha Army camp and placement and external liaison officer of BIFT M. Mujibur Rahman were present as special guests. The welcome address was also delivered by assistant director (AD) of DYD Abdur Razzak.
Later, the guests distributed the certificates among the trainees in the function.
As many as 88 youths including 22 young girls of Rangpur and Gaibandha districts took part in the training.
Earlier, a total of 940 unemployed youths including women of Monga-affected 5 northern districts-Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha-were imparted training on SKLMO in 11 batches.
Construction work of sculpture on Liberation War inaugurated in Barisal

Construction work of the 'Mukto Bihango' ( the freed bird) ,first sculpture on liberation war in Barisal, has been inaugurated on Friday morning at Amtala crossing of the city entrance point after 37 years of independence.
Advocate Shawkat Hossain Hiron, BCC Mayor inaugurated the construction work and inaugural ceremony held at the construction spot was addressed by Aminul Hassan, sculptor, Mohiuddin Manik Bir Protik, freedom fighter, Syed Dulal, president Barisal Sanskritik Sangothan Samanaya Parishad, Awlad Hossain Dilu, former mayor in charge, K M Shahidullah, local ward councilor, Advocate Talukdar Md. Yunus, district AL office secretary, Mehdi Hassan, chief executive officer of BCC.
Construction of the monumental sculpture 'Mukto Bihango' with steel made eight flying bird in memory of December 8, the liberation day of Barisal, would be completed within next three months at the cost of 10.07 lakh taka funded by Barisal City Corporation by using steel, stone , concrete and tiles.
Barisal Sangkritik Sangothan Samanaya Parishad and Charukala giving assistance in this project designed by Sculptors Hamiduzzaman Khan and Aminul Hassan and would be implemented by State Communication Firm of Dhaka.
Sources said first attempt of constructing sculpture on liberation war in the city was taken in 1996 and local people creating movement and breaking section 144 forced the authority to lay a foundation for that at Zila Parshad-Nagor Bhabon area.
However that project was abandoned by political governments and then by the initiatives of Barisal Charukala, the present site was selected and foundation was laid by Awlad Hossain Dilu, former mayor in charge of BCC on May 24, 2008.
Shopkeeper beaten to death in Patgram

A grocery shopkeeper was beaten to death by a group of miscreants after his refusal to sell essentials on credit to them in Ghonabari Kodur Bazaar under Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat, police sources said.
Quoting local people and eyewitnesses, police said that some miscreants led by Kashem Ali of the area went to shopkeeper Rabiul Islam, 25, on Wednesday night and demanded essential goods on conditions that they would pay the money in future.
The poor shopkeeper refused to sell goods to the miscreants on credit and asked them to purchase by cash payments that made the miscreants very angry.
At one stage, the miscreants started beating Rabiul mercilessly and left the place after injuring him seriously.
Local people immediately rushed injured Rabiul to Patgram Upazila Health Complex and later shifted him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) on the same night as his conditions deteriorated to the worst.
But, Rabiul succumbed to his injuries at the RMCH on Thursday morning. Victim's father Abdullah filed a murder case in this connection against 10 miscreants of the area with Patgram police station and police so far arrested killers Esmail Hossain, 26, Babar Ali, 45, and Bachchu Mian, 45, the sources said.
One held, phensidyl seized in Natore

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Bonpara Highway Thana Md. Masudur Rahman arrested one smuggler and recovered 20 bottles of Indian smuggled Phensidyl from Dhaka-bound night coach on Pabna-Natore highway of Rajapur Bazar under Baraigram Upazila in Natore district on Friday night.
The arrestee was identified as Md. Shahidul Islam (28), son of late Jahurul Islam at Ibrahimpur village under Sailkapura Upazila in Jhenidah district.
Acting on a tip-off a team of police raided the bus Kanti Paribahan (Jhenidah-J-11-0019) and arrested the smuggler with 20 bottles of Phensidyl. A case was filed with Baraigram Thana in this connection.

Construction of Kendua Press Club bhaban begins

The construction work of the Kendua Press Club bhaban has been begun on Wednesday.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Kendua upazila Mohammad Obaidur Rahman inaugurated the costruction work.
Chaired by president of the Press Club Syed Abdul Wahab, the function was addressed, among others, by general secretary of the club Sakul Islam Khan, Kendua upazila engineer Mohammad Afsaruddin, upazila secondary education officer AHM Nur-e-Alam and journalist Anisur Rahman Anju.
The UNO termed journalists as a mirror of the society and said newsmen can help the administration by their objective reporting.
He urged upon the newsmen to highlight the real picture of the society for upholding the truth and human rights.
RBMS distributes saree among distressed in Rajshahi

Ruposhi Bangla Mohila Sangstha (RBMS) has distributed 300 pieces of sarees and semai and sugar among 500 distressed women and beneficiaries of RBMS at its head office in Rajshahi on Friday morning. The RBMS authorities also distributed among 40 boys and 30 girls taka 200 and taka 300 each respectively and school dresses.

Housewife killed for dowry in Rupganj

One Hajera Khaton, 22, housewife, was strangulated to death at her father-in-law's house of Purbachal area at Rupganj in Narayanganj on 26th September last allegedly by her husband Badal Mia.
Police sources said, Hazera Khaton was killed for dowry, Hazera's mother filed a case acusing four persons. The police arrested Badal Mia and 4 others were absconded. The body of the deceased was sent to the morgue for autopsy.

Youth killed by elephant in Ctg

A youth was killed by wild elephant at Jamizuri area of Chandanish upazila in the district on Friday, police said.
The victim Abdur Sukkur, 20, son of Abdul Malek in the hilly area came under attack by a horde of wild elephants overnight Thursday, leaving him dead on the spot. Local people recovered the body on Friday.

Phensidyl seized in Jessore
Jessore, Sept 26 : Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel recovered 2,000 bottles of Indian phensidyl syrup from a truck at Bejpara in the district town early Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, a RAB team took position at Laujani crossing on Jessore-Benapole road and signaled the truck to halt. But the truck driver tried to flee ignoring the signal and later sensing danger left the vehicle at Bejpara, said the RAB source. The elite force later searched the truck and found 2,000 bottles of phensidyl syrup packed in a medicine carton, reports UNB.
One chopped to death in Bogra
Bogra, Sept 26 : A young man was chopped to death by some unknown assailants at his house at Kurigathi village in Dhunat upazila Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 25, son of Jesarat Ali, an employee of Rayganj Palli Bidyut office. Family sources said when Saiful was sleeping in his under construction house the assailants swooped on him at dead of night and chopped him to death. On information police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue. Victim's younger brother Saidul filed a case implicating their elder brother Abdul Haque and his wife Fulera Begum in the murder, reports UNB.
Dacoit beaten to death in Narail
Narail, Sept 26 : Local people surrounded a gang of robbers and beat one to death and rounded up another while they were looting a jute laden truck at Adnan in Srdar upazila early Thursday. Police said the robbers stopped the Jessore bound loaded truck from Narail town placing log on Narail-Jessore road at the point at abut 4.30am. They beat the driver and another rider indiscriminately and started looting the truck. Hearing the hue and cry, local people gheroaed the robbers and beat gang member Miraj, 30, to death and caught another one, identified as Hasan Sheikh while others managed to flee. Hasan was later handed over to the police after mass beating. Police said Miraj hailed from village Tilghari in Shalikha upazila of Magura district, reports UNB.
5 shops gutted in fire in Meherpur
Meherpur, Sept 26 : Five shops were gutted in a fierce fire in the district town early on Friday. Witnesses said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at Swapan Hardware in the early hours and soon engulfed the adjoining four shops. On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after two hours of efforts with the help of local people. The gutted shops are Swapan Hardware, AK Decorator, Mrittunjoy Sweets, Boighar and Sarker Jewellers. The affected shop owners claimed that cash and valuables worth over Tk 5 lakh were gutted in the blaze, reports UNB.
JMB man arrested in Khulna
Khulna, Sept 25 : A member of outlawed Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) was arrested from Zahidur Rahman road in the city on Wednesday evening. Acting on a tip-off, detective branch of police arrested JMB cadre Tanvir Ahmed, 26, from a house at about 5 pm. He hailed from Satkhira district. Mother of Tanvir Ahmed, however, claimed that her son is a businessman not a JMB activist, reports UNB.
