Eid shopping gains momentum in Kishoreganj

Eid shopping is gaining momeutum in Haor district Kishoreganj town. As the Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the prime festivals of the Muslims, has neared thousands of customers, irrespective of men, women and children, have thronged the markets of the town to purchase commodities, especially clothes, to celebrate the upcoming Eid.

The shopping centres in the town are busy. Even the footpaths of the town have become busier. Having no entrance, buyers belonging to the middle and low income groups are crowding the footpaths. Anowara super market, Bhuiyan market, Nirala Tower, Munni market, Ishakha shopping, Islamia market, Shaheed market, Arafat super market, Atouya Begar, New market, Municipal market, Terriputti, Bana-Bazar 'Sunsul Islam Khan market, Siddique market and Isha Kha road (Roth Khola) have been tastefully decorated to attract customers. All the markets are overcrowded by buyers.

Some shop owners said they have brought various kinds of readymade garments, saris shalowar-kamiz, suits, lehenga, pant and punjabi for Eid and Durga Puja festivals. But sale this year is not satisfactory.

They are expecting to make good profits ahead of Eid-ul-Fitrn. The people belonging to the marginal and low-income groups are buying things of their choice from the footpaths. The authorities have taken adequate measures in maintaining law and order to help shoppers buying in a free mood. Police, RAB and intelligences personnel, both in uniforms and plain clothes, are found patrolling the town.

4 sentenced to death for killing housewife in Bhola

Four accused persons of Monpura Upazila of Bhola district have been awarded death sentence for killing housewife Shimul Rani.

The verdict was given by Md Idris Ali, District and session Judge Bhola and Judge of Tribunal of prevention of cruelty to women and children, Bhola on Monday last.

Accused persons receiving death sentence are Barun Chandro Das, husband of the victim Shimul Rani, Ramesh Chandra and Dulu Rani, father and mother of Barun Chandra and Nitai Chandra Das, brother of Barun.

According to the prosecution case Barun Chandra Das beat and tortured his wife on 2nd June of 2006 for realisation of dowry.

As a result of beating and torture Shimul Rani was seriously injured and subsequently died in hospital. Ramesh Chandra, Dulu Rani and Nitai were also involved in the incident. Victim and accused persons are from village Sitakunda.

On 3rd June of 2006 Ramesh Chandra lodged a G.D with the local police station stating that Shimul Rani had died of diarrhoea. But Shailendra Nath Samaddar, S.I of Monpura police station discovered the truth on investigation and filed a murder case bearing number case bearing number 2 (7) of 2006.

After examination of witnesses the judge found the accused guilty of committing murder and sentenced them to death and also fined each of them Taka ten thousand.

Prosecution case was conducted by public prosecution, Jahangir Khan Advocate while advocate Md Alauddin, defended the accused persons.

ASS distributes ring-slabs among poor in Gaibandha

Adarsha Sheba Sangstha (ASS), a local non government organisation, distributed materials of sanitary latrines among the poor people of Kamardaha union under Gobindaganj upazila in the district on Wednesday.

The sanitary materials were distributed with financial support of Bangladesh NGO Foundation.

A simple function was held on the premises of Fashital High School with Rafiqul Islam, President of ASS, in the chair.

Upazila social welfare officer M. Iqbal Hossain addressed the ceremony as the chief guest.

The function was also addressed, among others, by M. Shariful Islam, manager of Sonali Bank, Fashitala branch, UP chairman Abdul Mottaleb Sarker Badsha and executive director of ASS Abdul Karim. The speakers stressed the need for bringing the areas of the upazila under sanitation coverage to make a better and disease-free society. Later, ring-slabs for sanitary latrines were distributed among the 85 people of the union free of cost.

Besides, some 400 saplings of wood and fruit bearing trees were also given to the 100 beneficiaries of the union. Earlier, a colourful procession was also brought-out in the area to create much awareness among the people on tree plantation and sanitation.

Dacoit arrested in Rupganj

A daring dacoity was committed on Dhaka-Sylhet highway near Khadhon village of Tarabo Pourashava under Rupganj in Narayanganj on the 25th September early in the morning. Acting on a tip off a team of Rupganj thana police arrested one of the robbers while 6/7 robbers were able to flee by a microbus.

A case was registered in this connection with the Rupganj thana. The arrested was identified as Mainuddin, 35 son of Ahammad Ali of Tuatola village of the Barguna District.

A pregnant woman was mercilessly beaten by a criminal of Mazipara village under Bhulta Union of Rupganj in Narayanganj on 22nd September and now she is fighting for life at Bhulta General Hospital.

According to the locals. Zakir, owner of a grocery shop, sent his wife to Shaifulla's house to bring his due money of Tk. 1500 which had been unpaid. As soon as she demanded due money Iqbal, son of Shafiullah assaulted and beat her severely. People rushed her to the Bhulta General Hospital where on duty doctors suggested to send her to Dhaka Medical College. As Zakir is a poor shopkeeper, he was unable to send her there. Then he took her to Rupgonj Health Complex.

Smuggled fertiliser seized, 2 held in Nageswari

Police seized huge quantities of smuggled Indian fertilisers and arrested two smugglers from Shaheed Minar area in Nageswari upazila town in Kurigram on Tuesday night, Police sources said.

Acting on secret information, a special police team from Nageswari Thana raided the place and seized 125 sacks smuggled Indian MoP and 25 sacks TSP fertilisers while those were being loaded in a truck for trafficking inside the country.

The police team also arrested smugglers Ruhul Amin, 30, and Rubel Hossain, 25, of the same area during the raid.

A case was filed against the arrested smugglers with Nageswari police station and they were sent to jail hajat when police produced them before a Kurigram court on Wednesday.

Pistol, 12 cocktails recovered in Satkhira

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered a locally made pistol and 12 cocktails from Kaliganj upazila of the district on Tuesday.

Police said, acting on a tip-off, a team of the elite force raided an abandoned two-storey house at Boiragi Char area and recovered the firearm.

The sources said, the recovered firearms were handed over to Kaliganj thana.

A case was filed in this connection.

Nutrition dev for bright future underscored

A seminar titled Nutrition Development of Mother and Children will produce genius and bright future was held at Dhubaura Upazila Auditorium Parishad on 17th September. World Vision Bangladesh, Dhuboura ADP Health. Project organised the seminar. Principal Abdul Motalab of Degree College inaugurated the workshop as chief guest while it was chaired by Hubert Gomes, Dhubaura ADP Manager.

Primary education teachers and employees of Family Planning participated in the seminar. Keynote paper was presented by multi media Dr. Shahidullah Bashar and keynote paper presented on HIV/AIDS by Dr Jainta Kumar Nath, Manager HIV/AIDS Prevention Project, Mymensingh Family Planning Officer Jahanara Begum, Dr. Anupam Bhatachariya, UHF P.O, Dhulara, Principal Halaluddin, Fazlur Rahman Siddique addressed in the Seminar.

Police constable killed in Nawapara road accident

BSS, Nawapara

A police constable was killed in a road accident near the police station at Nawapara industrial town on Jessore-Khulna highway here on Tuesday.

The victim was identified as Ashraf Ali, 40, constable No-529, Abhaynagar police station, Jessore.

Police said the accident took place when a Jessore-bound Rupsha Paribahan passenger bus knocked the police constable who was walking along the road. He died on the spot.

The police seized the bus. But none was arrested in this connection.

500 grams of heroin seized in Comilla

Comilla, Sept 25 : BDR jawans seized 500 grams of heroin from a passenger bus at Paduar Bazaar bypass on Dhaka-Chittagong highway early Thursday. On secret information, the border guards raided the Dhaka-bound bus from Comilla and recovered the heroin worth about Tk 50 lakh from under a seat at about 4:00am. None was arrested in this connection, reports UNB.

RAB seize heroin, hemp, phensidyl in Jessore

Jessore, Sept 25 : Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in separate drives, seized heroin, Indian medicine, phensidyl syrup and hemp in the district on Wednesday. A team of the elite force seized 600 grams of heroin from the houses of Mostar Ali and Jalil Sarder at Sadipur village in Benapole. They also seized 770 packets of Indian medicine from Bankra bazaar in Jhikargachha upazila and 2.5 kgs hemp from Purapara bazaar in Chougachha upazila, reports UNB.

Case filed against UP chairman, member in Manikganj

Manikganj, Sept 25 : A case was filed against a UP chairman and a UP member of Nali union in Ghior upazila on Wednesday for selling government rice in the black market. Ghior Project Implementation officer filed the case against UP Chairman Abul Hashem Biswas and member Swapan after police recovered the rice from the shops of three businessmen. Sources said the government allocated 22.50 mts of rice for 1,500 distressed people of Nali union to distribute 15 kg to each person. But 10 to 12 kgs of rice was distributed among each person instead of 15kg on Tuesday, reports UNB.

Bogra, Sept 25 : Police arrested a fugitive convict, who was sentenced to death in a murder case, from Charmatha area of the district town Wednesday. Police said acting on secret information they arrested Yakub Ali, 22, while he was working at a thread factory in the area at about 3:00 pm. Yakub, son of Lutfor Rahman, hailed from Satarbhog village in Noldanga upzila of Natore district. Police said Yakub was awarded death penalty recently in absentia for killing his co-villager Rafiqul Alam, reports UNB.

Two die in separate incidents in Sylhet

Sylhet, Sept 25 : Two people died in separate incidents in the district on Tuesday. A middle aged man was electrocuted at Chhayghari village in Jokiganj upazila. Family sources said Makhan Miah, 55, died instantly when he came in contact with a live electric wire at his house. Besides, a young man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Bianibazar upazila on the same day. The dead was identified as Tajuddin, 30. The reason behind the suicide could not be known immediately, reports UNB.

4 arrested with fake currency notes in Manikganj

Manikganj, Sept 25 : Four people were arrested along with fake currency notes worth Tk 5,700 at Manikganj Poura Super Market on Wednesday. Police said Sheikh Milan bought a mobile phone set from TM International of the Super Market and gave 23 fake notes of Tk 100 denomination to the shopkeeper, who later informed the police. The law forcers rushed to the spot and arrested Sheikh Milan. They recovered 34 more fake notes of Tk 100 denomination from his possession. As per his confessional statement, police also arrested his accomplices Khwaza Miah, Fakir Chan and Nizam. They hailed from Ghior upazila of the district. A case was filed, reports UNB.
